National STUDENT-Athlete Day, a program of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), has been celebrated annually on April 6 since 1987. National Student-Athlete Day recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and in their communities. National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Several BIG EAST member institutions hosted their own events to mark the occasion.
In honor of National Student-Athlete Day, the Villanova Athletics Department hosted a student-athlete appreciation dinner and team trivia night. The Villanova Athletics Department wanted to honor all of its student-athletes for their outstanding efforts in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community. Every student-athlete was invited to attend the dinner, which took place on campus! The meal theme was "A Taste of Philly," and selections included, Philly Cheese Steaks, Hoagies, Salads, and Philly Soft Pretzels. While eating, student-athletes played trivia in teams! Trivia questions were based upon five categories: "Movies of 2010" "Division I College Athletics" "U.S. Presidents" "Villanova" and "Philadelphia Foods". After trivia was over, we had the privilege of showing "Coming Off the DL" a Villanova-student made documentary about the lives of two Villanova students living with cerebral palsy. It was written and produced by a social justice documentary class at Villanova, and it features Nick Gaynor and Franky Kineavy, a women's and men's basketball student manager (respectively) and their hope for eliminating the stereotypes of people living with disabilities. Nick and Franky are a huge part of Villanova Athletics, and we were so happy we had the opportunity to show their film to our student-athletes!
On Wednesday, April 6th, Seton Hall University celebrated National Student-Athlete Day by honoring one member each team, chosen by the head coach, who exemplifies the meaning of "student-athlete." Recognition came between games of the softball double-header against St. John's. READ MORE
