Big East Announces Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winners

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference has announced the 24 winners of the 2012-13 Big East Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
 
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each Big East-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the Big East Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
 
The winners include four student-athletes who were chosen to the Capital One Academic All-America teams in the 2012-13 season - Marquette volleyball player Danielle Carlson, Marquette soccer player Bryan Ciesiulka, Notre Dame tennis player Greg Andrews and Seton Hall softball player Brittany Hammer.
 
The list also includes six student-athletes who were either chosen as Big East Players of the Year or earned the top individual honors as their respective conference championships in 2012-13.
 
Notre Dame had a league-high five individuals honored by the conference, while Louisville had four winners. Marquette, Seton Hall and Villanova had three each.

Alex Tully

Villanova

Earned NCAA All-Mid Atlantic Regional honors to help Villanova earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Women's Cross Country

Laura Nagel

Providence

Earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, finishing 35th overall and helping the team to a national runner-up finish. Earned All-Big East honors after placing 11th at the conference meet.

Field Hockey

Erin Conrad

Louisville

Registered a 1.81 goals-against average and a .745 save percentage for the 12-8 Cardinals. All-Big East Second Team selection.

Football

Duron Harmon

Rutgers

All-Big East First Team safety. Third-round draft pick of the New England Patriots. Earned a 4.0 GPA in the Spring 2013 semester.

Men's Golf

Michael Kania

Villanova

Two-time All-Big East selection. Named to the Ping All-Region Team and was Villanova's 2012-13 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Women's Golf

Hannah Basalone

Seton Hall

2012 All-Big East selection. Registered two top-10 finishes and one top-five finish in 2012-13.

Men's Lacrosse

Jeff Lowman

St. John's

Two-time All-Big East Second Team goalie. Ranked third in the conference in save percentage (.567) and second in saves per game (12.75).

Women's Lacrosse

Nikki Boltja

Louisville

All-Big East First Team and IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team honoree. Led the Big East in goals per game (3.71), scoring 63 goals in 17 contests.

Women's Rowing

Coxswain for varsity eight that won two Big East Championship grand finals and advanced to two NCAA Championshps. Placed 13th at 2013 NCAA Championship.

Won the IC4A indoor title in the long jump. Ranked 23rd nationally in the long jump. Placed second at the Big East Championship.

Women's Indoor Track & Field

Big East indoor champion in the weight throw and the league runner-up in the shot put. Placed 10th in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championship.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field

Two-time Big East outdoor champion in the 800-meter run. Three-time All-America, three-time Big East champion and seven-time All-Big East performer.
