BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors Split by DePaul, Providence and Marquette

NEW YORK  –  Monday’s BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly honors were highlighted by DePaul’s Simon Megally and Jake Scheper who helped the Blue Demons earn their first league win of the season with a come-from-behind victory over Villanova; Providence’s Jeff Kilday who helped the Friars to a win over No. 24 Xavier and Marquette’s Louis Barazza.
 
In addition to DePaul, Marquette and Providence, No. 12 Georgetown placed three on the weekly honor roll. All four schools earned league wins on Saturday, along with No. 1 Creighton, whose winning streak has extended to 12 games.
 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Simon Megally, DePaul, Jr., F, Park Ridge, Ill. –  Megally led the BIG EAST in goals and points last week with two goals in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Villanova, the first league win for DePaul this season. Megally evened the score for the Blue Demons with a goal in the 50th minute after Villanova had jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first 20. Megally then scored the game-winning penalty kick in the 85th minute after drawing a foul in the box. The win ended DePaul’s seven-game losing streak.  In the 1-1 week for DePaul, Megally fired off 10 shots, six on goal. He leads DePaul with five goals and 10 points.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jeff Kilday, Providence, RS-Sr., D, Marshfield, Mass.  – Kilday was part of a Providence defense that held No. 24 Xavier to just seven shots with none on goal, helping the Friars earn a three-goal shutout victory over the Musketeers on the road. Xavier had been averaging 10.80 shots and 5.60 shots on goal per game prior to the match. The Musketeers were fourth in the conference for shots on goal. Kilday also registered his first goal of the season, scoring the third goal of the game off a corner kick.   
 
GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Luis Barraza, Marquette, Fr., GK, Santa Teresa, N.M.  – Barraza collected his third and fourth shutouts of the season in a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles which included a Marquette’s first BIG EAST win of the season. Both Marquette victories were decided by one goal as Barazza made eight total saves, including six in the team’s win over Seton Hall. His 48 saves is second-most in the conference. Barazza faced 29 shots fired his way with the eight on goal.   
 
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Jake Scheper, DePaul, Fr., F, Cincinnati, Ohio – In a 1-1 week for the Blue Demons had three points with a goal and an assist, tying for second in the league. The emerging rookie helped DePaul battle back from a 2-0 deficit as he scored the Blue Demons’ first goal in the 30th minute then helped Megally score the equalizer in the 50th minute. The 3-2 win over Villanova ended DePaul’s seven-game losing streak.  
 
BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll
Brandon Allen, Georgetown, Sr., F, Old Bridge, N.J. – Scored the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over No. 21/19 Butler.
 
Cole Seiler, Georgetown, Sr., D, Anderson, S.C. – Scored the security goal in the 55th minute in a 2-0 victory over No. 21/19 Butler. The goal was his first of the season. Helped a back line that led Hoyas to their third-straight shutout, all in BIG EAST play.
JT Marcinkowski, Georgetown, Fr., GK, Alamo, Calif. – Posted his third-straight shutout with four saves against No. 21/19 Butler in a 3-0 win.
 
David Selvaggi, Marquette, Sr., F, Elmhurst, Ill.—Recorded his second game-winner of the year in the 52nd minute of a 1-0 victory over Seton Hall, the first league win for Marquette this season.
 
Mac Steeves, Providence, Jr., F, Needham, Mass. – Registered a goal and an assist for three points in the Friars road win against No. 24 Xavier. Steeves goal was the eventual game-winner, his eighth goal of the season.
