Marquette Duo Earns BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Honors

Darian Powell led the offense while Morgan Proffitt sparked the defense for the hot-streaking Golden Eagles.

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Darian Powell, Marquette, Jr., F
Powell scored all three of Marquette’s goals in a 2-0 week, beginning with a two-goal showing against Villanova on Thursday. The junior scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute from seven yards out before supplying the insurance goal in the 83rd minute. On Sunday against a dangerous Butler team, Powell scored the match’s lone goal in the 32nd minute, driving home a header in the 1-0 win.
 
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Morgan Proffitt, Marquette, Jr., D/M
Proffitt guided the Golden Eagles to back-to-back shutouts last week. The Proffitt-led Marquette defense did not allow a single shot on goal in shutout victories over Villanova and Butler. MU held a 19-6 advantage in shots last week, including 8-0 on goal, and a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. Marquette is unbeaten (4-0-1) over its last five with all four of the wins in that span coming in shutout fashion.
 
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Kristyn Shea, Providence, Jr., GK
Shea went 2-0 in a pair of crucial games last week, highlighted by a 12-save showing against nationally ranked DePaul. The Blue Demons entered the contest unbeaten over their last 12 BIG EAST games, extending to the 2013 season. Shea’s 12 stops marked a career high. The junior then followed that shutout win with another clean sheet on Sunday, denying all three shots faced at Seton Hall.
 
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Samantha Dewey, Xavier, Fr., F
Dewey snags her second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor of the year after totaling four points in a 1-1 week for the Musketeers. The rookie’s week was highlighted by a one-goal, two-assist showing against Creighton on Sunday, leading XU to the 3-0 victory.
 
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Rachel Daly, St. John’s, Sr., F
Daly stretched her scoring streak to six games with back-to-back one-goal matches last week. The senior provided the game winner in the 83rd minute against Xavier on Thursday before lifting the lid on scoring at Villanova in the 2-1 victory on Sunday.  
Melissa Downey, Georgetown, Grad., F
Downey became the third BIG EAST player to record a hat trick in league play this season with her three-goal showing against Seton Hall on Thursday. Downey, a graduate school transfer student from Princeton, was making her first career start for the Hoyas.
Georgia Kearney-Perry, St. John’s, R-Sr., D
Kearney-Perry led a St. John’s back line which allowed just six shots on goal in a 2-0 week for the Red Storm, which included a shutout of Xavier on Thursday. St. John’s outshot its opponents 40-10, including 20-6 on goal, while Kearney-Perry also showed a flash of offense by assisting on Rachel Daly’s goal in the third minute against Villanova.
Rachel Piccus, Xavier, Jr., GK
Piccus went 1-1 on the week despite surrendering just one goal over 180 minutes in net. The junior recorded back-to-back nine-save performances in a 1-0 setback to St. John’s and 3-0 win over Creighton.
Rachel Ugolik, Providence, Jr., F
Ugolik led the offensive charge in the Friars’ 2-0 week, providing the game-winning goal over nationally ranked DePaul on Thursday night before assisting on Sunday’s game winner at Seton Hall. PC has won four of its last five to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship.
