2015 BIG EAST Championship Results
MASON, Ohio – Georgetown won the 2015 BIG EAST Men’s Cross Country Championship team title, dethroning back-to-back league champion Villanova by one point. The Hoyas’ five scorers all finished within the top 10 to total 33 points, including runner-up Jonathan Green. The Wildcats were led by Patrick Tiernan who claimed his third-straight BIG EAST individual title, the first runner in league history to do so. Nova had three of the top-five finishers but its fourth and fifth scorers finished outside the top 10 to total 34 points.
Georgetown’s team crown is its first since 2008 after finishing runner-up at three of the last four BIG EAST Championships. The team trophy is the Hoyas’ seventh overall. The team champion was decided by one point for just the second time in league meet history after Notre Dame edged Georgetown 47-48 in 2004.
The BIG EAST Championships were held at Golf Center at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, for the first time, a flat course primed for quick times. Tiernan cruised through the 8K course to snap the tape at 22:23.2, beating Green by over 20 seconds who crossed the line at 22:44.0. Butler’s Erik Peterson took the bronze at 22:50.2, while Villanova Robert Denault (22:59.9) and Jordan Williamsz (23:13.7) rounded out the top five. Tiernan’s individual title was the 10
th by a Villanova runner.
The Hoyas had four of the next five finishers, with Providence’s Julian Oakley edging himself in the mix to finish ninth overall (23:24.4).
The Friars finished third as a team with 68 points, followed by Butler in fourth with 97 points. Marquette took fifth (152), followed by Creighton in sixth (195), championship host Xavier in seventh (196), DePaul eighth (228) and Seton Hall ninth (255).
Tiernan, Green, Petereson, Denault, Williamsz, Scott Carpenter (GU), Darren Fahy (GU), Amos Bartelsmeyer (GU), Oakley and Ahmed Bile (GU) were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team for finishing in the top 10. All-BIG EAST Second Team honorees were: Harry Warnick (VU), Hugh Armstrong (PC), Robert Hurlbut (VU), Aaron Hanlon (PC), Tom O’Neill (PC), Christian Alvarado (GU), Michael Lederhouse (GU), Trevor Crawley (PC), Connor Sheryak (GU) and Bobby Johnson (BU).
Following the meet, Georgetown was tabbed BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year, led by Director of Track & Field Michael Smith.
