Four Teams Share BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Four different teams earn BIG EAST weekly honors after the second weekend of league action saw four one-goal games, one overtime contest between ranked teams and four shutouts. For the week, the BIG EAST posted seven total shutouts. Villanova’s Sean Sheridan and Butler’s Marco Charalambous earn their first BIG EAST weekly honors, while Vincent Keller of Creighton and Jordan Stagmiller of St. John’s repeat.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sean Sheridan, Villanova, Sr., M, Levittown, Pa. – Sheridan led the conference in points last week with six, as he scored both game-winning goals in a 2-0-0 week for Villanova. Sheridan had a hand in all four goals scored by the Wildcats last week with two goals and two assists. Against Marquette on Saturday, the senior midfielder scored in the 78th minute on a left-footed shot from 12 yards out. In the 45th minute, Sheridan set up Lucas Hodges’ header with a corner, tying the game at 1-1 going into halftime. Against La Salle, Sheridan scored in the 65th minute off a free kick just outside the box, breaking the scoreless tie with the eventual game-winning shot.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Vincent Keller, Creighton, Sr., D, Freiburg, Germany – Earning his third weekly honor for the year, Keller helped the only team left undefeated in Division I to another two shutout week as he anchored a defense that allowed just eight total shots in wins over Missouri State and BIG EAST foe DePaul. Keller and the defense only allowed two total shots to get on goal in 161 minutes of action. Creighton’s opponents had just five corner attempts against them.
GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Jordan Stagmiller, St. John’s, R-Sr., GK, Avondale, Ariz. – Stagmiller earns his second-straight goalkeeper of the week honor after a five save, two-shutout week that included a 1-0 victory over BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. Sagmiller had three saves against Central Connecticut State and two against Seton Hall for the win.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Marco Charalambous, Butler, RS-Fr., Nicosia, Cyprus – In a 2-0 week for Butler, Charalambous had two assists for the week. Charalambous assisted on David Goldsmith’s game-tying goal at Evansville before serving up the ball that Vincent Mitchell would deposit for the game-winner at Providence.
BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll
Vincent Mitchell, Butler, Sr., M/R, Reckford Clarendon, Jamaica -- Scored the game-winner in both of Butler’s wins last week, helping the Bulldogs maintain an unbeaten 6-0-3 record. Against Evansville, he scored in the 90th minute of the team’s 3-2 as Butler played a man short. At Providence, Mitchell’s goal early in the second half broke a scoreless tie and was the eventual game-winner.
Fabian Herbers, Creighton, Jr., M/F, Ahaus, Germany -- Had four points for the week with two goals, including the game-winning goal in the 34th minute against BIG EAST foe DePaul.
Keegan Rosenberry, Georgetown, Sr., M/D, Ronks, Pa., -- Scored the game-winning goal in overtime against No. 20 Xavier to keep Georgetown on its current seven-game unbeaten streak. The senior helped the defense to a shutout in the 1-0 victory and allowed just one shot on goal in 10 shots.
C. Nortey, Marquette, RS-Sr., F, Accra, Ghana – Registered two goals and an assists for five points last week and moved into sole possession of sixth place on Marquette’s all-time scoring list with 29 career goals. Both goals were go-ahead tallies on the road against then-No. 7 Notre Dame and Villanova, the Golden Eagles eventually lost both games.
Luis Esteves, St. John’s, Sr., M, Ngongotaha, New Zealand – Scored two goals, including the game-winner against Seton Hall in a 2-0-0 week for the Red Storm. Tallied an insurance goal in the 3-0 win over CCSU and his first-career game-winner in the 57th minute against the Pirates.
