Villanova Sweeps Cross Country Weekly Awards

NEW YORK – Villanova’s Patrick Tiernan and Angel Piccirillo are this week’s winners of the BIG EAST Male & Female Athletes of the Week in Cross Country.
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Patrick Tierney, Villanova, Jr. – Tiernan won the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa., with an 8K time of 23:55.  He beat 277 other runners including Georgetown’s Jonathan Green who finished third, four seconds behind.  Tiernan, the 2014 BIG EAST champion, won for the seventh time in 14 collegiate starts.  The Villanova team finished second in the meet to Georgetown.
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Angel Piccirillo, Villanova, Jr. – Piccirillo took fourth place in a strong field of 126 runners at the Princeton Interregional Meet.  She ran 6K in 20:51.6.  Piccirillo, who has been the Wildcats’ top finisher in each of her first two meets this season, helped Villanova to a fourth-place team finish.

Creighton Freshman Ogg Shatters School Record
Freshman Lauren Ogg smashed the Creighton school record in the 5K by 23 seconds, finishing in a time of 17:04 at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.  Ogg finished 21st overall (15th among Division I competitors) in a field of 436.  Creighton took seventh place among 17 Division I teams.
 
Georgetown Men Win Paul Short Invitational
With junior Jonathan Green pacing the Georgetown team with a third-place finish, the Hoyas edged Villanova and won the team title.  Green’s time was 23:59.  The Hoyas had all five point scorers among the top 13 (3/5/6/10/13).
 
DePaul’s Tedeschi Wins SIU-Edwardsville John Flamer Invite
Junior Courtney Tedeschi became DePaul’s first individual champion since 2010 when she won the SIU-Edwardsville Invite with a 6K time of 22:07.4.  She dropped her time by over 1:16 compared to last season’s race on the same course.
 
Mazzei Leads Xavier Women At Paul Short Run
Sarah Mazzei was the top Xavier women’s performer at the Paul Short Run.  She led the team to an 11th-place finish with a time of 21:16 in the 6K race, the fifth fastest time in school history.  She finished 30th overall among 312 competitors and beat her previous best time by more than a minute.
 
 
Georgetown, Villanova, Providence Are In Polls
The Georgetown and Villanova men’s and women’s teams are ranked this week in the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Poll.  In the men’s poll, Georgetown is 10th with Villanova 12th.  In the women’s poll, Providence is No. 3 followed by Georgetown at No. 7 and Villanova at No. 26.
