Four Teams Represented In First BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Weekly Awards
NEW YORK – Track & Field season is underway with the BIG EAST squads competing in their first meets over the past weekend. On Tuesday, the conference announced the first weekly awards of the season. They were split between four different schools, Providence, DePaul, Georgetown and Marquette, who each had student-athletes rank in the national top performances.
BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
JORDAN MANN, Providence, GS, St. Louis, Mo., Distance
Mann finished second in the 5,000 meter run at the Boston Season Opener over the weekend. His time of 13:53 was the fourth-fastest time in Friar history. Mann’s finish leads the conference so far in this young season and is second in the NCAA. His competitor, Gilbert Kirui from Iona College has the top time in the country as he outpaced Mann by less than three seconds in the same meet.
BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
TREVOR KINTYHTT, DePaul, Jr., Akron, Ohio, Throws
Kintyhtt opened the season on a strong note by winning the shot put event at the Blue & Gold Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on Friday. His winning throw of 16.93 meters was a new personal best for the junior which ranked first in the conference and 15th in the NCAA. The Ohio native also finished as runner up in the weight throw with a distance of 17.95 meters which ranks 34th in the country and also leads the league.
BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
SABRINA SOUTHERLAND, Georgetown, Jr., New York, N.Y., Middle Distance
Southerland won the mile at the Navy Lid Lifter in Annapolis, Md., over the weekend with a time of 4:51.66. She was the lone competitor in the race to break five minutes. Her time leads the league and is third best in the NCAA. Southerland also ran as the second leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay team. The squad finished with a time of 3:52.15 which leads the league and is 16th nationally.
BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
MONIQUE FELIX, Marquette, Fr., Sheboygan, Wis., Jumps/Multi
Felix, a rookie, won the triple jump at the Blue & Gold Invitational in South Bend on Friday with a personal best leap of 11.73 meter, which leads the conference and ranks 24th nationally. The distance is the fifth-best mark all-time in program history. Felix also took sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, setting a freshman record with a time of 9.07 seconds, the sixth fastest time at Marquette and second best finish in the conference. She also competed in the 4x400-meter relay team that took second place at the meet with a time of 3:54.84, also second in the conference behind the Hoya women.
