Season’s First Set of BIG EAST Weekly Women’s Soccer Awards Announced

Daly, Gorden, Shea and Dewey headline first week of action.

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Rachel Daly, St. John’s, Sr., F – Daly had a hand in both game-winning goals on the weekend for the Red storm, scoring the go-ahead goal at Stony Brook in the 81st minute on Sunday night after providing the dish in the game winner in the 60th minute against Towson on Friday. St. John’s opens the season 2-0 for the second time in three years.
 
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Gorden, DePaul, Sr., D – Gorden anchored the back line which surrendered just one goal over two games, including a shutout of Pac-12 squad Utah on Sunday. The senior-led defense limited a Cincinnati squad to one score after the Bearcats totaled 44 in 2014. DePaul’s opponents were limited to just six corners in the 1-0-1 weekend which extended the Blue Demons’ regular season unbeaten streak to 20 games.
 
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Kristyn Shea, Providence, Jr., GK – Shea went 2-0 to open the year, earning home wins over Marist and Syracuse. The junior made four saves against each foe, turning away all shots faced against the Orange on Sunday to notch her first shutout of the year. Shea surrendered just one goal on the weekend for an .889 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average. The Friars are 2-0 to open the year for the first time since 2010.
 
BIG EAST Rookie of the Week
Samantha Dewey, Xavier, Fr., F – Dewey totaled four points on a goal and two assists in her first weekend of collegiate action. She provided the helper in Xavier’s first goal of the game on Friday at Evansville when the Musketeers were facing a 2-0 deficit before reeling off three straight scores for the win. The rookie notched a goal and was credited with an assist in a 4-3 setback at Purdue on Sunday, while her four shots at Evansville on Friday were a team best.
 
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Tori Doss, Xavier, Jr., F – Doss led the offensive effort for XU with two goals and an assist in a 1-1 weekend. Xavier totaled six goals over two games, 60 percent of its goals total from the 2014 season. The junior scored back-to-back goals at Purdue to tie the game and then go ahead before the Boilermakers scored a pair of unanswered goals to secure the win.
Amanda Engel, Marquette, Sr., GK – Engel went 1-1 in the opening weekend, playing all 182:25 in the cage for the Golden Eagles. The senior made three saves in each contest, surrendering just one goal per game. Her efforts helped to hold the Wolverines scoreless over the final 86 minutes on Sunday after UM totaled eight goals in its season opener.
Molly Pfeiffer, Marquette, Jr., D/M – Pfeiffer scored the game-winning goal at Michigan on Sunday in the 79th minute after being credited with the assist on the game-tying score just 34 seconds prior.
Ylenia Sachau, Creighton, Jr., D – Sachau scored the game-winning goal against South Dakota on Friday before accounting for the Bluejays’ lone score in a 2-1 setback at UMKC on Sunday. The junior played center back for the first time in her career, helping Creighton to hold its opposition scoreless for the first 170 minutes of the year.
Erin Scott, Creighton, Fr., GK – Scott became the first Creighton rookie to record a shutout in the season opener after turning away three shots in the 1-0 win over South Dakota. She followed that up with a seven-save showing in a 2-1 setback at UMKC on Sunday.
