Winners Of Conference Openers Share BIG EAST Weekly Soccer Awards
Butler, DePaul, Marquette and St. John’s earn weekly honors while Georgetown places two on honor roll.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Jacie Jermier, Marquette, R-Sr., D
Jermier led Marquette to its highest scoring game since 2014’s BIG EAST opener (Sept. 25) by totaling a career-best five points off one goal and three assists. Trailing 1-0 to Creighton through most of the first half, Jermier served up a free kick in the 38
th minute to teammate Darian Powell who notched the game-tying score. Twenty minutes later, Jermier provided the dish off a corner kick to Morgan Proffitt for the go-ahead header. In the 78
th minute, Jermier recorded the insurance goal off a penalty kick, fooling the Creighton keeper to make the score 3-1. The senior concluded her scoring by assisting on yet another header by Proffitt in the 80
th minute. The Golden Eagles went on to win 5-1 at Valley Fields.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Georgia Kearney-Perry, St. John’s
The BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year helped keep the ball out of Seton Hall’s possession for most of Sunday night’s league-opening win. Kearney-Perry anchored the defense which did not allow a shot on goal for the second time in three games. In the Red Storm’s 3-0 win, St. John’s held a 15-3 advantage in shots, including 8-0 on net, along with a 10-3 edge in corners. The Red Storm’s 9-1 start to the year is its best 10-game start in program history.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Madison Card, Butler, So., GK
Card recorded her fifth shutout of the season in the Bulldogs’ BIG EAST-opening win over Villanova on Sunday. The sophomore made four saves, two in each half, playing all 90 minutes against the Wildcats in the 3-0 victory. Butler improved to 8-3-1 on the season and won for the third time in four games.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Franny Cerny, DePaul, Fr., F
In her BIG EAST debut, Cerny scored a pair of goals, finding the back of the net on both shot attempts in the Blue Demons’ 4-0 victory over Xavier on Saturday. The rookie supplied the game-winning goal in the 37
th minute off a feed from teammate Alexa Ben, before scoring an insurance goal in the 70
th minute. Cerny’s four goals this season rank tied for second on DePaul.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Rachel Corboz, Georgetown, So., M
Corboz scored both goals in the Hoyas’ 2-1 road win at Providence on Sunday, the first coming in the 12
th minute before providing the gamewinner in the second overtime period in the 105
th minute, putting home a free kick from 20 yards out. Corboz’s 11 points this season are tied for the team lead.
Rachel Daly, St. John’s, Sr., F
Daly was a human highlight reel on Sunday night, scoring a pair of goals in the Red Storm’s 3-0 win over Seton Hall. Daly provided the gamewinner with a diving header in the 26
th minute before supplying an insurance goal in the 60
th from just inside the 18. The two-goal effort marked her third consecutive multi-goal game while bumping her career total to 40 goals to move into a tie for first in program history.
Lucy Edwards, DePaul, So., M
Edwards led a DePaul defense which allowed just three shots in Saturday’s shutout win over Xavier, with just one attempt reaching the Blue Demon goalkeeper. DePaul held a 27-3 advantage in shots, including 12-1 on net, while not allowing a corner kick.
Emma Newins, Georgetown, Grad, GK
Newins played all 105 minutes in net in the Hoyas’ double-overtime win at Providence on Sunday, making four saves, including one in the 89
th minute. The graduate student surrendered just one goal which was off the foot of BIG EAST Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year Catherine Zimmerman.
Morgan Proffitt, Marquette, Jr., D/M
Proffitt was influential on both sides of the ball, anchoring a Marquette defense which allowed just three shots on net in Sunday’s win over Creighton, while also scoring a career-high two goals against the Bluejays, including the game winner.
