MBB Minute: Xavier's Bluiett, Sumner Take Weekly MBB Honors
NEW YORK – Xavier swept weekly men’s basketball honors with sophomore Trevon Bluiett being named BIG EAST Player of the Week and freshman Edmond Sumner being selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. In a 2-0 week, the Musketeers defeated DePaul 84-64 and won at Marquette 74-66. Xavier owns a 16-1 record going into a home game against Georgetown on Tuesday.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, So.
Bluiett led Xavier in scoring in a pair of wins while averaging 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals for the week. In an 84-64 victory over DePaul, he scored 24 points, which included five 3-pointers. In a 74-66 win at Marquette, the sophomore netted 18 points. For the season, Bluiett is seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 15.3 average. He has reached double figures in scoring in 16 of 17 games this season.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Edmond Sumner, Xavier, G, Fr.
In his first game back from an injury suffered in a fall at Villanova that caused him to miss three games, Sumner had 15 points, five assists and three rebounds in a 74-66 victory at Marquette. He shot 4-of-8 from the field. For the season, Sumner is the Musketeers’ second leading scorer with an 11.3 average.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Isaiah Zierden, Creighton, G, Jr.
Scored 31 points, including 8-of-11 shooting, in a 91-80 win at DePaul. Averaged 19.5 points in a 1-1 week.
D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, Georgetown, G, Sr.
Averaged 17.0 points, 7.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had 33 points in a win at St. John’s.
Kris Dunn, Providence, G, Sr.
Hit the game-winning basket in a 50-48 win at Creighton and averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a 1-1 week.
Isaiah Whitehead, Seton Hall, G, So.
Posted 15 points, and seven assists in an 81-72 win at No. 12/12 Providence.
Ryan Arcidiacono, Villanova, G, Sr.
Averaged 13.5 points in a 2-0 week. Had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists in an 83-68 win over Marquette and 15 points in a 55-50 win at Georgetown.
