Xavier Tabs Two BIG EAST Weekly Awards After a 2-0 Week
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Julian Gressel, Providence, Sr., M (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany)
Senior midfielder Julian Gressel recorded seven points in a 2-0 week for Providence, which included a one-goal victory over cross-town rival Brown and a 3-1 win over Villanova. Gressel scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute for a non-conference win for the Friars against Brown. Grussel tallied two more goals and one assist in the Friars’ 3-1 win over Villanova.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Cory Brown, Xavier, Jr., D (Nelson, New Zealand)
Junior Cory Brown helped Xavier to a two-shutout week as he played the full 90 of each game at center back. Brown also tallied the game-winner in the 19th minute at Cleveland State for a non-conference win.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Colin Hanley, Xavier, R-So., GK (Mandeville, La.)
Redshirt sophomore keeper Colin Hanley recorded two shutouts in goal, giving him four clean sheets in his last five starts. Hanley faced 31 shots overall and totaled 11 saves, six in the 2-0 league victory over St. John’s and five in a non-conference win against Cleveland State. Over four league starts, Hanley has posted a 0.49 goals against average.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Luka Prpa, Marquette, Fr., F (Wind Lake, Wis.)
Luka Prpa scored his first league goal over the weekend in a 1-1 tie against Georgetown. The freshman ran his season goals total up to a team-best six with a penalty kick in the 67th minute, giving Marquette a point in the league standings.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Alex Kapp, Creighton, Sr., GK (Amawalk, N.Y.)
Recorded his sixth shutout of the season and needed to make only one save during the Bluejays’ 1-0 victory over No. 9 Butler to move into the top spot in the BIG EAST. It was just Butler’s second shutout of the season.
Erik Rodriguez, DePaul, Sr. M (Elgin, Ill.)
His pair of strikes, including the game-winner in the 89th minute, led the Blue Demons to a 2-1 victory over Seton Hall. It was the first BIG EAST win for DePaul and snapped a three-game losing streak. Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 18th minute.
PJ Koscher, Georgetown, Sr., D (Bel Air, Md.)
Scored his first career goal in a 1-1 draw at Marquette as he helped the defense limit the Golden Eagles to just a penalty kick goal in a road tie for the Hoyas.
Luis Barraza, Marquette, So., GK (Santa Teresa, N.M.)
Made just one start for Marquette and tied a season-high with seven saves in a 1-1 draw against Georgetown. He made multiple saves in the final minutes of the second extra-time to deny Georgetown the go-ahead goal.
Jalen Brown, Xavier, Sr., F (Indianapolis, Ind.)
Produced points in both matches during a 2-0 week, assisted on Coy Brown’s game-winner against Cleveland State and scored Xavier’s second goal during Saturday’s 2-0 win over St. John’s.
