On The National Scene
No. 1 Connecticut maintained its title as the league leader and national leader in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll for the third week in a row. The undefeated Huskies extended to a 13-0 record by cruising to home victories over Villanova and Dartmouth last week. Old Dominion stays in the top 20, coming in at No. 19. The Huskies and the Monarchs also lead the BIG EAST in the NCAA RPI, with UConn standing at No. 3 and ODU at No. 14. Temple follows at No. 30 while Liberty enjoyed a nine-spot jump to No. 34. Providence (35), Georgetown (66), Villanova (67) all maintained their national positions and Quinnipiac moved up two spots to No. 72.
Got Goals
UConn’s Casey Umstead and Liberty’s Alynn Richardson are carrying a six-game goal-scoring streak into the fifth week of conference play while four other BIG EAST field hockey athletes have recorded goals in their last two games. Umstead moved into the top 13 NCAA of active career leaders list for goals (40), while Richardson’s six goals this season have increased her career goals to 14. UConn’s Charlotte Veitner and Amanda Collins, Providence’s Sylvia Miller and Quinnipiac’s Angie King have each scored a goal in their team’s last two matches.
Peaking At The Right Time
After opening the season 0-4, Liberty has turned things around to win four of its last five games, including a 2-1 overtime win over No. 20 American. The Lady Flames, who are currently tied with Providence for second place in BIG EAST play, have outshot their last five opponents, 88-50. Alynn Richardson leads Liberty with six goals over the last five games, while Allison Schaefer boasted an .833 save percentage and her first shutout of the season.
NFHCA Honors Schaefer
Liberty’s Allison Shaefer was selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s weekly honor roll this week. The goalie received the honor after securing six saves in a 2-1 overtime win at No. 20 American on last Thursday. The freshman rounded out the weekend with five more saves in an 8-0 shutout over Georgetown last Saturday.
