NEW YORK – With five games done, Creighton holds on to the lead in the men’s soccer standings with 13 points and a 4-0-1 record, outlasting Marquette 2-1 last night. In second is Xavier who scored a key point with a 2-2 double-overtime draw against Villanova on Saturday. Butler and Providence tie for third with nine points each with St. John’s in fifth with eight points after a 2-1 upset victory over No. 11 Butler at home. If the season were to end today, Villanova would be the last team in the playoffs with seven points.
St. John’s 2, No. 11 Butler 1
Propelled by a late-game, goal from Harry Cooksley, St. John’s picked up a win over a ranked opponent for the first time in three years on Saturday night, as the Red Storm defeated No. 11/14 Butler, 2-1, at Belson Stadium. Butler (8-4-1, 3-2-0 BIG EAST) entered the contest ranked sixth in the RPI, having lost to only three top-10 opponents and drawing against a Louisville team in its season-opener that has since risen to No. 4 in the nation. Lewis Suddick scored for Butler in the 65th minute. Alistair Johnston scored the first goal for St. John’s in the 38th minute.
No. 6 Creighton 2, Marquette 1
Senior captain Ricardo Perez scored two goals as No. 6 Creighton defeated Marquette 2-1 on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium. The Bluejays improved to 8-2-3 overall and 4-0-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles fell to 3-5-4 during 2016 and 0-3-2 in conference action. The senior's two-goal performance marked the second multi-goal performance of his career. Luka Prpa tied the game in the 72nd minute.
DePaul 1, Georgetown 0
Erik Rodriguez has exhibited a nice scoring touch for the Blue Demons the last two games. His early goal and a yeoman effort from the back line and goalkeeper sparked DePaul to a 1-0 BIG EAST victory over Georgetown Saturday at Shaw Field. Rodriguez’s third game-winner of the season came in the 15th minute, cashing in after a nice set-up from Hans Wustling and Philipp Koenigstein. This was the second consecutive conference win for the Blue Demons after starting out 0-3.
Providence 1, Seton Hall 0
Providence defeated BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall, 1-0. The Friars, who have won four-straight games, improve to 8-5 and 3-2 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall drops to 3-9-1 and 1-4 in the BIG EAST. Early in the match, Brendan Constantine tallied his first goal as a Friar and was assisted by Julian Gressel. Gressel forced a Seton Hall turnover and crossed the ball to Constantine, who fired it past Seton Hall’s Julian Spindler. Gressel’s assist extends his point streak to four games.
Xavier 2, Villanova 2 (2OT)
Four different players scored in the 2-2 double overtime draw between Xavier and visiting Villanova. Lucas Hodges and Andreas Bartosinski scored for Villanova, while Matt Nance and Jalen Brown scored for the Musketeers. Villanova led 1-0 in the first half. The teams traded goals in the second period before Xavier ended scoring in the 72nd minute. Villanova’s Will Steiner had six saves.
