NEW YORK – Seton Hall freshman Tyler Kauth and Xavier freshman Emily Conners captured the first set of BIG EAST Swimming & Diving weekly after registering respectable performances at the BIG EAST vs. Big 12 meet that featured Butler, Seton Hall, West Virginia and Xavier.
BIG EAST Male Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week
Tyler Kauth, Seton Hall, Fr.
Kauth helped the Pirates beat three-time defending BIG EAST champ Xavier, 231-118, with a gold-finish performance in the 200-yard backstroke and a silver finish in the 100-yard backstroke. The freshman clocked in a winning time of 1:52.03 in the 200 backstroke and then finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.87, which was less than a second off the winning time of 50.90. Kauth also finished in the top five of the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.06. In relays, he was on the third-place 200 free relay team that came in at 1:25.68.
BIG EAST Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week
Emily Conners, Xavier, Fr.
Conners won a pair of individual events for the Musketeers at the WVU Invite over the weekend, winning both free-style sprint events with a time of 24.50 in the 50 and 53.12 in the 100. Conners also took part in all four relays for the Musketeers, including winning the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.43.
Notable Performances
Audrey Gosnell, Butler, Sr.
Gosnell turned in a stellar performance for the Bulldogs competing in five relays at the West Virginia Invitational and setting a career record in the 200-yard freestyle with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 1:55.90. In the 50-yard freestyle, Gosnell posted a time of 24.72 for a second place finish. Gosnell continued her success in the 100m freestyle, taking home third place with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 54.01.
Henry Hollinshead, Georgetown, Fr.
Hollinshead took home Georgetown's lone win of the meet, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:53.25. He also cut more than a second off of his time in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 52.43 to place second by less than a half second.
Cristina Barrett, Fr., Chatham, N.J./Chatham
Barrett won both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle races against Towson on Saturday. It was the third time in as many collegiate meets that she has won both races. In the 500, Barrett improved her time by more than a half second, touching the wall in 5:03.48 to win by more than two seconds.
Sara Ouellette, Seton Hall, Fr.
Ouellette was the runner-up overall and the top BIG EAST finisher in three events at the Big 12 vs. BIG EAST meet last weekend, finishing second in the 400 IM (4:37.94), second in the 500 freestyle (5:14.00) and second in the 200 IM (2:13.02).
