Georgetown’s Carpenter, Providence’s Collins Earn Weekly Cross Country Awards

NEW YORK – For the second straight week, Georgetown’s Scott Carpenter has been chosen BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week in cross country.  For the third time this season, Providence’s Sarah Mary Collins has been named Female Athlete of the Week.  Both runners posted top-20 individual finishes against loaded fields at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
 
All 10 BIG EAST men’s and women’s squads are preparing for the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships to be held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Oct. 28.    
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Scott Carpenter, Georgetown, Sr. – Carpenter finished 13th overall at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.  He ran the 8K course in 24:07.0.  Carpenter was the top BIG EAST finisher in the men’s meet and the top performer from the Mid-Atlantic Region.  The Hoya team finished in 14th place.

BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Sarah Mary Collins, Providence, Sr. – Collins placed 16th at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, an event that included 17 ranked women’s teams in a 31-team field.  She was the top BIG EAST runner in the field, covering 6K in 20:33.1.  Collins led the Friars to a third-place team finish.

Women’s News
Butler’s Katherine Turner took 15th place against some of the nation’s elite competition at the ISU Pre-National Invitational at Terre Haute, Ind.  She ran 6K in 20:29 to help the Bulldogs finish 16th…Xavier junior Madeline Britton helped the Musketeers take 11th place among 31 teams at the Bradley Pink Classic.  She finished 13th in a field of 267 competitors with a time of 21:15:20.  Her time tied for the 10th fastest in school history…Creighton’s Emily Martin also ran at Bradley and helped the Bluejays take 13th place in a 31-team field.  Her time was 21:18 and she finished 16th…Georgetown’s Josette Jones was the Hoyas’ top women’s finisher at the Wisconsin Invitational.  She finished 89th with a time of 21:19.1.  The Hoyas finished in 22nd place…For Providence, the top Friar finisher after Collins at the Wisconsin Invitational was Katie Lembo, who took 27th place with a time of 20:43.7…Villanova also competed in Wisconsin with Angel Piccirillo finishing 19th with a time of 20:35.9…St. John’s Antonia Howard ran a personal-best 18:27.0 in a 5K and won the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.  The Red Storm finished fourth among 12 teams.    
                                                                                                                  
Men’s Notes
Euan Makepeace was the Bulldog leader on the men’s side of the Pre-National meet, covering the 8K course in 25:08.7.  He finished 74th overall in a field that included seven ranked teams.  Butler finished 19th…Creighton’s Pat Reinschmidt led the Bluejays to a 15th-place finish in a field of 27 teams at the Bradley Pink Classic.  He finished the 8K course in 25:17 to take 39th place in a field of 241 runners.
 
Providence Women Are No. 4 In USTFCCCA Poll
In the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Poll released on Oct. 18, the Providence women are ranked No. 4.  The Villanova women are slotted at No. 22.  In the men’s poll, Georgetown is ranked No. 23 and the Providence men are receiving votes.
