NEW YORK - Villanova's Darby Goodwin and Xavier’s Rodrigo Suriano were named Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week after leading their respective teams in victories this past weekend.
BIG EAST Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week
Rodrigo Suriano, Xavier, Sr.
Suriano picked up a pair of first place finishes at Miami of Ohio, winning both freestyle sprints with BIG EAST qualifying times (50 free – 21.00 and 100 free – 46.13). Suriano also swam legs of the second place finishing 200 medley relay and 800 free relay.

Darby Goodwin, Villanova, So.
The Wildcat sophomore won three events with BIG EAST qualifying times at the double dual meet against Drexel and La Salle this past weekend. She finished first in the 100 backstroke, setting a new pool record at the Pavilion with a time of 55.80. Goodwin also took first place in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall at 2:02.14, more than four seconds ahead of the next opponent. Her final first place effort came in the 200 IM, where she clocked in at 2:06.57. Goodwin was also part of Villanova’s 200 medley relay, which took second with a time of 1:45.53
Notable Performances
Patrick Brannigan, Providence, Fr.
The freshman broke the Friars’ school record in the 50-meter freestyle with his time of 24.11. The previous record was set by Matthew Card in 2010 at 24.41. The time was enough for Brannigan to finish in first place.
Helen Smith, Providence, Sr.
Smith lowered the school record in the 200-meter backstroke to 2:20.26, which she previously held at 2:20.99, en route to her first place finish in that event.
Jake Hoin, Villanova, Jr.
Hoin was the top performer at the meet for the Wildcats. He placed first in the 50 free with a time of 21.44 and placed second in the 100 fly with a mark of 51.21. The junior was also part of the 200 medley relay that took first place, clocking in with a time of 1:34.48.
Caroline Gaertner, Xavier, So.
Gaertner won a pair of individual events for the Xavier women against Miami of Ohio, taking first in the 100 back with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 56.99 and winning the 100 fly in 56.36, also qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships. Gaertner also took the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay that placed second against Miami.
