BIG EAST Notes (PDF)

NEW YORK  –
BIG EAST men’s soccer has 10 matches in four days starting midday on Wednesday on the BIG EAST Digital Network with No. 15 Butler at DePaul. Following the noon match, Villanova will host St. John’s at 3 p.m. on BEDN. At 7 p.m. three matches will go at once on the network.

Quick Notes
  • There are three matches left to the 2016 season which will quickly come to an end in eight days. Going into Wednesday, no team has clinched a playoff spot and no team has played themselves out of the picture.
  • Despite a loss to Villanova on Saturday, Creighton remains at the top of the standings with 13 points and a 4-1-1 record. Tied for second is Providence and Butler with 12 points. Butler has the match-to-match advantage over Providence with a 2-0 win on Sept. 24. Tied for fourth is Xavier and Villanova - who tied in their head-to-head match 2-2. Rounding out the potential playoff picture if the season were to end before Wednesday’s matches is St. John’s with 8 points and a 2-2-2 record.
  • Looking to move up in the standings are Georgetown (7 points), DePaul (6 points), Marquette (5 points) and Seton Hall (3 points).
  • Providence coach Craig Stewart earned career win No. 100 with a 2-1 win over DePaul. The Friars are riding a five-match win streak coming into the home stretch.  They have gone from the bottom of the standings to potential hosting a first round game in the tournament.

No. 15 Butler at DePaul  - 12 p.m.
Tied for second in the standings, Butler came out of its slump on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Seton Hall David Goldsmith leads the league in points (23) and goals (10) but has not found the back of the net since Oct. 1. Butler moved up from No. 19 to No. 15 in the NSCAA standings on Tuesday. For DePaul, they are looking to play their way into the top six. Forward Simon Megally leads DePaul with 18 points (7G, 4A) and has eight points in league play. The Blue Demons will look for his efforts to get past Butler’s keeper Eric Dick.

St. John’s at Villanova - 3 p.m.
St. John’s lost to Georgetown, 1-0 on Saturday after upsetting Butler the week before. Villanova this time is coming off the upset, after defeating then-No. 10 Creighton 1-0 at home. The Wildcats will be playing on their home pitch again, while the Red Storm is playing its second-straight road match. The Wildcats boasted three of the four league player of the week awards this week after playing a good team win over the Bluejays.

No. 19 Creighton at Xavier - 7 p.m.
A top of the standings battle will be featured on the new XU Soccer Complex turft, the first league home match played on the surface in 2016 after it had to be replaced due to flooding. Creighton wil be looking to get back on track after a loss at Villanova, while Xavier will also be looking for a W after a 4-1 setback at Marquette on Saturday. Creighton has stayed in the top 25 all season, while Xavier has flirted with the national rankings, receiving votes for three weeks this season.

Georgetown at Seton Hall - 7 p.m.
Seton Hall has lost their last four games after getting a 2-0 victory over Marquette on Oct. 1. Georgetown is coming off a 1-0 victory over St. John’s at home. Brett Campbell scored the eventual game-winner for the Hoyas against the Red Storm. He leads GU in points (8) based on a team-best four goals. Seton Hall’s Andres Arcila leads the Pirates in points with six goals and four asists. He is 3-for-3 in PK’s this season. Seton Hall is currently in last in the league with three points. Georgetown is sitting just outside the current tournament field, just one point behind sixth-place St. John’s.

Marquette at Providence - 7 p.m.
Marquette at Providence could feature a lot of goals scored as both their leading scorers - Marquette’s Luka Prpa and Providence’s Julian Gressel, tie for second in the league in points with 22. Prpa has seven points in league play, all in the last three games (Georgetown, Creighton and Xavier). Gressel has 11 points in BIG EAST play, second in conference matches only. The Friars are the hottest team in the standings as they have won their last five matches. Marquette upset Xavier on Saturday, with a high-powered offensive performance (four goals), which is what the Golden Eagles had displayed in non-conference play earlier in the season.
