Old Dominion, Providence, Quinnipiac and Temple battle for the last two spots in the 2016 BIG EAST Championship

NEW YORK – The last weekend of the regular season will determine the last two qualifiers for the 2016 BIG EAST Championship.

Half the Battle
Teams that finish in the top four in the BIG EAST regular-season standings, based on winning percentage, will qualify for the conference tournament. Conference leader No. 3 Connecticut and league-newcomer Liberty are the only two teams to have clinched spots so far in the BIG EAST Championship field. Standing at 6-0, the Huskies have already claimed the top seed and at least a share of the regular-season title. A UConn win over the Bobcats would keep the Huskies from sharing the regular-season title. In Liberty’s case, a victory against Temple would give the Lady Flames the two-seed and a loss would place them at the fourth-seed.

Playoff Scenarios
Down to the last weekend of the regular season, four teams will play with the intent to solidify their position in the BIG EAST Championship. Old Dominion, Quinnipiac and Temple sit at 3-3 while Providence leads the quartet at 4-2. The first matchup of the weekend sees Providence to Old Dominion on Friday while Temple visits Liberty and Quinnipiac travels to No. 3 UConn. With a Friar win, Providence would claim a spot in the tournament while a Liberty loss would give the Friars the two-seed. In the second matchup, a Temple victory would give the Owls a place in the tournament. A Liberty win would leave Temple’s post-season chances at the mercy of an ODU loss. Quinnipiac’s only way of making it into the postseason is to upset No. 3 Connecticut and hope for a Liberty victory.
