Villanova's Patrick Tiernan
Bronx, N.Y. -- The Georgetown men and the Providence women repeated as the winners at the 2016 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships presented by Jeep Friday at Van Cortlandt Park. The Hoya men placed six runners among the top 12 finishers. The Friar women had four runners finish among the top eight competitors.
Villanova had both individual winners. Senior Patrick Tiernan set a BIG EAST record with his fourth consecutive individual championship in the men’s 8K race. His time was 24:18.2. Senior Angel Piccirillo won the women’s 6K in 20:49.6.
The Georgetown men, who took first place comfortably with 33 points, were led by senior Scott Carpenter, who finished second with a time of 24:28.7. Junior Amos Bartelsmeyer and senior Michael Clevenger finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 24:45.1 and 24:49.8. Other top Hoya finishers included senior Michael Lederhouse (24:59.7-9
th), sophomore Christian Alvarado ((25:05.9-11
th), freshman Jack Van Scoter (25:09.1-12
th) and freshman Matthew Bouthillette (25:17.7-16
th). The Hoyas are ranked No. 23 in the USTFCCCA Poll.
Providence took second with 65 points. Senior Julian Oakley was the leader with a fourth-place finish and a time of 24:37.6. Senior Hugh Armstrong was eighth with a time of 24:55.9. Senior Stephen Robertson took 13
th with a time of 25:12.0 followed by senior Trevot Crawley, who was 19
th with a time of 25:25.2.
Butler finished third in the team standings with 69 points. Freshman Euan Makepeace finished third overall with a time of 24:32.9. The Bulldogs showed strong depth with runners finishing 14
th, 15
th 17
th and 20
th.
The Providence women, who are ranked fourth nationally, were paced by junior Brianna Ilarda, who finished third with a time of 21:01.1. Teammate Sarah Mary Collins, last year’s BIG EAST individual champion, landed in fourth place with a time of 21:10.2. Junior Millie Paladino was sixth with a time of 21:12.8. Freshman Abbey Wheeler was eighth at 21:24.4.
The Villanova women were second with 49 points. After Piccirillo, freshman Siofra Cleigh Buttner was the individual runner-up. She was 11 seconds behind Piccirillo with a time of 20:49.6. Sophomore Bella Burda took ninth with a time of 21:29.0. Two other Wildcats made the top 20 with junior Katie Fisher taking 18
th with a time of 21:58.5 and sophomore Sammy Bockover finishing 19
th at 21:59.7 at 19
th.
The Georgetown women landed in third place with 68 points. The top Hoya finishers were 10
th, 11
th, 12
th and 14
th. Junior Kennedy Weisner led the way at 10
th with a time of 21:33.9. She was followed by junior Autumn Eastman (21:45.2-11
th), junior Josette Norris (21:49.5-12
th) and freshman Paige Hofstad (21:52.4-14
th).
Butler put two runners in the top 10. Senior Katherine Turner finished fifth with a time of 21:11.7 and freshman Josephine Threstrup took seventh with a time of 21:20.3. The Bulldogs were fourth in the team standings with 93 points.
