Butler’s Goldsmith BIG EAST Offensive Player Of The Week For Third Time
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
David Goldsmith, Butler, Sr., F (Bristol, England)
Senior David Goldsmith repeats as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season after a three-goal week for the Bulldogs, a league high for the week. Goldsmith scored two goals in a 4-2 win over Georgetown including the game-winner and the insurance goal in the 89th minute as No. 7 Butler moved to 8-1-1 on the season. He also scored the second goal in a tough 3-2 loss at No. 6 Indiana. His three goals this week give him 10 on the season, which ranks in the national top five.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Mitch LaGro, Creighton, So., D (Dallas, Texas)
Sophomore Mitch LaGro helped the No. 10 Bluejays to a 1-0-1 week which included a shutout of the previously unbeaten and untied No. 12 Loyola-Chicago. LaGro played all 200 possible minutes during the two matches for Creighton, which also included a 1-1 draw at St. John’s. Against both St. John’s and Loyola-Chicago, only nine shots on goal were allowed. LaGro also scored his first career goal to open scoring against No. 12 Loyola-Chicago on Tuesday night, which became the eventual game-winner.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Alex Kapp, Creighton, Sr., GK (Amawalk, N.Y.)
Alex Kapp repeats as Goalkeeper of the Week after another 1-0-1 week for No. 10 Creighton which included a shutout win over previously unbeaten and untied No. 12 Loyola-Chicago and a double overtime one-goal draw against St. John’s on the road in league play. Kapp had five saves in the win against the ranked Ramblers and three against the Red Storm with a 0.45 goals against average for the week. Kapp has had five shutouts this season.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Jonathan Jimenez, Seton Hall, Fr., F (Cape Coral, Fla.)
Jonathan Jimenez had three points in a 2-0 win for Seton Hall against Marquette. Jimenez did it all for the Hall, scoring the eventual game-winning goal in the sixth minute and assisting on the insurance strike in the 53d. The Marquette game was the first three-point outing for Jimenez. He also fired two shots on Tuesday at Rider.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Arun Basuljevic, Georgetown, Jr., M (Mahopac, N.Y.)
Basuljevic scored a goal in each game in a 1-1 week for the Hoyas. He scored on a PK in the 3-1 win over American and the first goal of the 4-2 loss at No. 10 Butler.
Danny Griffin, Providence, Fr., M (Wethersfield, Conn.)
Scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Xavier for Providence on Saturday, helping the Friars capture their first league win.
Filippo Ricupati, St. John’s, So., F (Milan, Italy)
Had three goals for six points on the week, tying Butler’s David Goldsmith for most points this week. Ricupati scored both goals in the win over Saint Joseph’s and scored the lone goal in the 1-1 tie against No. 10 Creighton on Saturday.
Andrew Withers, St. John’s, RS-So., GK (Wellington, New Zealand)
Posted a 1-0-1 week between the pipes for the Red Storm that included five saves in a 1-1 overtime draw against No. 10 Creighton and four in a shutout victory over Saint Joseph’s.
Zach Zandi, Villanova, So., M (West Chester, Pa.)
Scored the only goal in a 1-0 non-league victory over Princeton on a PK and added his second goal of the week, the third goal for the Wildcats in a 4-2 league win over DePaul.
