Providence scores double-overtime win in head coach Jim Crowley’s debut.

Seton Hall 74, Savannah State 60
The Hall's starting backcourt of JaQuan Jackson and LaTecia "TT" Smith combined for 37 points to power the Pirates. Seton Hall led Savannah State from wire-to-wire in the triumph, going up by 13 at the break and as many as 17 late in the fourth quarter. Jackson led all scorers with 21 points, while Smith added five rebounds and five steals to a 16-point outing. Seven different Pirates scored at least five points in the contest including four of The Hall's seven freshmen that saw action.

East Tennessee State 68, Butler 59
Butler outscored ETSU 20-12 in the third quarter to grab a lead, but the Buccaneers closed out the contest 29-18 in the fourth to secure the win. Freshman Kristen Spolyar led the charge for Butler with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Spolyar helped spark the BU comeback in the third by attacking the rim. She finished the game 11-of-12 from the charity stripe while adding seven rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes. Michelle Weaver was also a driving force for BU in the third quarter. Weaver ended the night with eight points, three rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Georgetown 72, -/RV George Washington 57
Georgetown outscored the George Washington 32-9 in the fourth quarter to open the 2016-17 season with a 72-57 victory on Friday evening at McDonough Arena. Senior guard Faith Woodard and junior guard Dorothy Adomako both posted double-doubles to help the Hoyas win their ninth-consecutive season opener. Trailing by eight entering the fourth quarter, the Blue & Gray cut it to three and then staged a 23-2 run to close out the game over the final 5:27 to pick up the victory. Adomako managed 11 points in the run and Georgetown was a perfect 14-of-14 from the line in the final stanza to push for the comeback win.

Providence 92, Colgate 85 (2OT)
Providence earned a thrilling, 92-85, double-overtime victory over Colgate to open the 2016-17 season on Friday. It also marked the first victory for Head Coach Jim Crowley, since taking over the reins of the Friars' program in May. Five Friars reached double figures in the win, led by Yoyo Nogic who matched her career high with 23 points on 6-16 shooting from the field, including a 4-9 performance behind the arc. In the second overtime, Sarah Beal nailed a jumper to start the scoring, then the Raiders responded with a three-pointer to take a 82-81 lead. From there the Friars out-scored Colgate 11-3 in the final 3:56 of play to take the 92-85 victory. Beal finished the night with 17 points, 15 of which came after the halftime break. With her four assists, Beal moved into a tie for 12th on the Friars' all-time career assist list (299) with Diann Reynolds `88.

10/11 Mississippi State 108, Villanova 62
Villanova opened the 2016-17 season in the University of Maine Tipoff Tournament where they lost to the No. 10 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs by a score 108-62. Villanova will play Purdue in tomorrow’s consolation game at 5 p.m. In the loss, the freshmen duo of Mary Gedaka and Kelly Jekot led the way with 12 points, while Alex Louin finished with 11 points. Gedaka was 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line, while Jekot was 2-of-3 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Marquette 87, Longwood 37
Every available player saw action in Marquette’s season opener on Friday as the Golden Eagles turned in an impressive victory, downing Longwood, 87-37 at the Al McGuire Center. Beginning at the 1:48 mark in the first quarter, Marquette (1-0) held the Lancers (0-1) scoreless and went on a 26-0 run for over 10 minutes of action, and gave up just two points in the second quarter. Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Allazia Blockton led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, while sophomore Erika Davenport recorded her 10th career double-double, tallying 18 points and securing ten rebounds. Senior McKayla Yentz had 14 for Marquette, including shooting 4-9 from three-point range, followed by Danielle King with ten points and five assists on the night.

RV/RV South Dakota State 63, RV/RV Creighton 56
Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, Creighton dropped its season-opener at South Dakota State, 63-56, on Friday. Shooting just 28% (13-of-46) in the opening three periods, Creighton went into the final period down 48-32. The Bluejays got warmed up in the final 10 minutes, shooting 9-of-15 (60%) to pull within five at 56-51 with just 2:31 left on the clock. However, coming out of a Creighton timeout South Dakota State proved equal to the challenge by forcing the Bluejays into turnovers on consecutive possessions to pull away down the stretch. Audrey Faber led the Bluejays with 12 points in the contest, while MC McGrory finished with 10 points. Redshirt freshman Jaylyn Agnew was impressive in her first action as a Bluejay, posting four points, six rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.

21/21 DePaul 99, Appalachian State 58
Behind Ashton Millender's 19 points and 16 from Amarah Coleman, the Blue Demons ran past Appalachian State 99-58 in the Maggie Dixon Classic.  After forcing 32 turnovers, they advance to Saturday's title game and face UAB (1-0) at 8 p.m. Jessica January finished with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds while Deja Cage scored 13 points and Brooke Schulte 10. Playing all 11 players, Bruno watched his team build a 65-20 lead by halftime. DePaul had four players in double figures after 20 minutes. It was a 51-point margin by the middle of the third quarter.
