MBB Minute -- Creighton Tops Wisconsin; Georgetown Falls To Maryland In Gavitt Tipoff Games
The Gavitt Tipoff Games continued Tuesday with No. 22/23 Creighton knocking off No. 9/10 Wisconsin 79-67 and Georgetown losing to Maryland 76-75.
Creighton shot 50 percent from the floor and placed four players in double figures against Wisconsin. The Bluejays played a disciplined game, committing only seven turnovers while forcing the Badgers into 16 miscues. The three-guard lineup of Khyri Thomas, Maurice Watson Jr. and Marcus Foster provided the offensive punch. Thomas led the way with 18 points followed by Watson Jr. (17) and Foster (15).
CenturyLink Center was sold out with 17,879 fans in attendance. The Bluejays (2-0) own nine top-10 wins in school history and four of those have come as a BIG EAST member.
Georgetown held a nine-point lead with 2:21 left, but could not hang on against Maryland, ranked No. 24 in the USA Today poll. The Hoyas’ L.J. Peak paced four players with 21 points. Rodney Pryor finished with 14 points. Isaac Copeland added 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Hoyas shot 37-of-42 (.881) from the foul line.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games continue Wednesday night with Butler hosting Northwestern at Hinkle Fieldhouse. FS1 has the contest at 7 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs won their opener 89-52 against Northern Colorado. Forward Kelan Martin earned Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Butler and Northwestern have met 26 times with the Wildcats holding a 16-10 edge.
