Patrick Tiernan of Villanova won the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships held at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Tiernan’s time over the 10K race was 29:22.0.  He is the first Villanova NCAA winner in the men’s championship since 1963.  Last year, Tiernan finished second in the NCAAs.

Georgetown’s Scott Carpenter was the next highest BIG EAST finisher, taking 10th in a time of 30:03.0.

In the men’s team results, Georgetown finished 21st and Providence was 24th.

On the women’s side, Providence was the highest BIG EAST team finisher, taking 13th place.  Villanova was 21st.  The top individual finisher was Villanova’s Angel Piccirillo, who covered the 6K race in 20:13.8.

Tiernan and Piccirillo were the 2016 BIG EAST Championship winners last month.

Cross Country is one of the BIG EAST’s strongest sports.  The Villanova women have won nine NCAA crowns, more than any other school nationally.  The Providence women were the last BIG EAST team to capture a national championship, taking home the crown in 2013.
