Akina Wellere scores a career-high 19 as St. John’s loses tight one to No. 22/22 Miami.

George Washington 72, Villanova 69
The Villanova Wildcats (1-2) lost a hard fought 72-69 game to the George Washington Colonials (3-1) in their home opener on Sunday afternoon. In the loss, the Wildcats were led by Jannah Tucker who scored a career-high 21 points while Megan Quinn registered 18 points and six rebounds and Alex Louin posted 12 points, a career-high five steals and four assists. The Colonials opened the game on a 7-2 run but Villanova battled back and trailed by one, 15-14, after 10 minutes of play. The teams kept the contest close with five lead changes in the second half. With the score tied at 39 heading into the third quarter four three-pointers helped George Washington break away with a 57-50 lead.  In the final stanza, the Wildcats put up consecutive three-pointers to cut the Colonial lead to two (64-62).  The Wildcats kept the score within two for the final seconds but a deflected pass kept them from scoring the equalizer.

Wisconsin 60, Butler 55
Butler's (2-2) first road contest of the season came down to the wire as the Wisconsin Badgersprotected their home court to record a 60-55 victory. BU took a two-point lead into the final 10 minutes, but wouldn't be able to pull out the win. The two-point cushion was the result of a 14-12 BU lead after the first quarter. Both teams scored 11 in the second and came out of the half to score 14 points each in the third. The fourth went to the Badgers as the home team closed out the game 23-16. Sophomore Guard Michelle Weaver led BU in scoring for the second-straight game, ending the contest with 20 points in 33 minutes. The sophomore point guard added six rebounds, one assist and one steal to her stat line against Wisconsin. Butler also got 17 points from freshman guard Kristen Spolyar and 15 points from sophomore forward Tori Schickel.

Minnesota 90, Seton Hall 57
The Pirates team (3-1) dropped their first contest of the season at Minnesota (4-0) on Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena.  Freshmen Skyler Snider and Deja Winters were the lone Pirates in double-figures, tying for the team-high with 10 points apiece. Minnesota-native Claire Lundberg finished with eight points in her homecoming outing, also grabbing six rebounds to tie Snider for the team-high. The Hall scored the game's first five points and trailed by only five after a quarter, before Minnesota used a big second period to pull ahead by 14 at the half. After a Hilaire lay-in cut the lead to 18-16 early in the second, the Golden Gophers reeled off a 22-8 run to close the second frame to swell their lead to 40-24 at the break and led by double-digits the rest of the way.

#22/22 Miami 62, -/RV St. John’s 50
Taking on the 22nd-ranked team in the nation, St. John’s (1-2) fell to Miami, 62-50, at Carnesecca Arena Sunday night. Sophomore Akina Wellere led all players with a career-high 19 points in 31 minutes of action. Maya Singleton tallied eight points in 22 minutes of play off the bench. The junior also grabbed four rebounds and came away with a pair of steals. Junior Imani Littleton pulled down a season-best eight boards and added two assists and two blocks in 22 minutes. In the first quarter, the Hurricanes jumped out to a 16-12 lead. In the second, St. John’s (1-2) stayed within striking distance, getting within one (21-20) after Weller drained a three with 5:01 left in the half, but a pair of free throws gave Miami a 28-23 lead at the half. In the third, the Red Storm mounted a comeback with a 13-0 run to take a 39-31 lead with 4:01 left. Miami fought back to get within two (45-43) entering the fourth. From there, Miami held the Red Storm to just three points in the final five minutes of the game.
