MBB Minute -- Butler Beats Vanderbilt In Las Vegas
Butler, Seton Hall and St. John’s all saw action in tournaments on Thanksgiving Day. The Bulldogs tasted victory, while the Pirates and Red Storm absorbed close defeats.
Butler used a late 14-3 run to knock off Vanderbilt 78-66 in the Las Vegas Invitational. Tyler Lewis led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points. Kelan Martin added 14 points, while Andrew Chrabascz posted 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs will face No. 8/9 Arizona for the tournament title Friday night at 10:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
Seton Hall got a career-high 28 points from Khadeen Carrington, but lost to Florida 81-76 in the first round of the Advocare Invitational in Orlando, Fla. Freshman Myles Powell added 16 points off the bench. Desi Rodriguez finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Carrington leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 23.3 scoring average. The Pirates play Quinnipiac tonight at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
St. John’s and VCU were tied three times in the second half before VCU held on for a 75-69 win in the second round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. Freshman Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm with 18 points. Bashir Ahmed had 13 points and freshman Marcus LoVett had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. St. John’s plays Old Dominion tonight at 9:30 p.m. on AXS.
Providence begins play Friday in the Emerald Coast Classic in Destin, Fla., with a first-round game against Memphis at 9:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. Rodney Bullock leads the Friars (3-1) in scoring (21.0) and rebounding (7.5). PC also is first in the BIG EAST in scoring defense in the young season, yielding only 58.0 points per game.
