PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After almost 64 minutes of a back-and-forth battle between No. 2 seed Liberty and third-seeded Providence, the Lady Flames claimed the last seat in the BIG EAST Championship, presented by Jeep, with a 1-0 victory over the Friars on Friday at the Temple Sports Complex and Howarth Field.
Liberty’s offense paced the matchup with 23 shots and nine penalty corners while Providence goalkeeper Megan Guilbert kept the Friars in the matchup with a game-best eight saves.
With the scored tied at zero after the first half, Liberty senior Bethany Barr scored the decision maker with 6:55 left in regulation.
Providence tried to find the equalizer with a shot from Kali Kilmer three minutes later but fell short on the attempt.
Through the victory, Liberty advances to its first BIG EAST Championship game, where it will face off against UConn, ranked fourth nationally, on Sunday at 1 p.m. The final will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
