WASHINGTON, D.C. – An exciting day of Semifinal action of the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship, presented by Jeep, took place at Georgetown’s Shaw Field on Friday afternoon, with a pair of dramatic finishes. With the sun shining, temperatures in the 60s and a breeze throughout the day, conditions were ideal for a November day in our nation’s capital. Top-seeded Marquette used a golden goal in the 96
th minute to defeat fourth-seeded St. John’s, while No. 3 seed Georgetown edged No. 2 seed DePaul in penalty kicks to advance. The Golden Eagles and Hoyas will square off on Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET) in DC with the BIG EAST’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship up for grabs. No. 1 Marquette 2, No. 4 St. John’s 1 (OT)
Just shy of six minutes into the first overtime period, Marquette’s Carrie Madden bicycle kicked home a highlight-reel golden goal as the top-seeded Golden Eagles bounced fourth-seeded St. John’s from the BIG EAST Championship with a 2-1 win. Madden scored both of MU’s goals on the afternoon, notching the game-tying goal in the 35
th minute after St. John’s Shea Connors struck first in the 29
th. Morgan Tinari assisted on Connors’ score, her fourth of the season. Madden’s goals were her fifth and sixth of 2016, with Liz Bartels dishing on the first goal and Madison Dunkin serving up the ball on the game-winning goal. The Red Storm outshot Marquette 10-7, with St. John’s Diana Poulin and Marquette’s Maddy Henry making two saves apiece. The Golden Eagles had the lone strike in the overtime period, what would be the game winner. St John’s threatened early, with Henry holding strong in goal in her first postseason appearance.
Marquette moves on to its fourth BIG EAST title game appearance, showing a 2-1 record in the final. The Golden Eagles improved to 12-1-1 all-time against the Red Storm, including 2-0 in the conference postseason.

No. 3 Georgetown 1, No. 2 DePaul 1 (2OT) – Georgetown advances on PKs, 5-4
It was a tale of two halves between second-seeded DePaul and third-seed host Georgetown.
Franny Cerny scored her ninth goal of the season 17:25 into the opening period, as DePaul controlled the ball for much of the first half, outshooting the host Hoyas 6-3 to carry a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Georgetown took control, holding DePaul without a shot for nearly 28 minutes. Marina Paul would score her second of the season for GU, providing the game-tying goal in the 66
th minute as she tapped the ball home during a scrum in front of the net. The Hoyas outshot DePaul 5-2 over the final 45 minutes as the team entered overtime with eight shots apiece. Both teams were limited to just one shot apiece in overtime, as the game was to be decided in penalty kicks.
The Blue Demons subbed out starting goalkeeper Lauren Frasca, who finished with two saves, for Vanessa Nigg to face Georgetown in PKs. Rachel Corboz stepped up first for Georgetown, beating Nigg for the first successful attempt. Franny Cerny stepped up next for DePaul, beating Arielle Schechtman, who totaled three saves on the afternoon. GU’s Taylor Pak and DPU’s Jessie Schmidt both succeeded on their tries, as did Meghan Shaver and Taylor Schissler. Carson Nizialek (GU) and Avery Hary (DPU) made it 4-4, setting up a dramatic final round. Georgetown’s Crystal Thomas gave the Hoyas a 5-4 lead as she nailed her attempt, putting all the pressure on Elizabeth Endy. Endy’s strike slammed against the crossbar as Georgetown advanced, 5-4, on penalty kicks. The Hoyas will make their third appearance in BIG EAST title game, eyeing their first conference crown.
