BIG EAST Player of the Week
Dorothy Adomako, Georgetown, Jr., G
In a pair of wins last week over George Mason and previously undefeated Alabama, Adomako led the Hoyas with a BIG EAST-best 22.5 points per game average along with 6.0 rebounds and .679 shooting. The junior shot a blistering 9-of-11 against the Crimson Tide on Sunday as Georgetown dealt Alabama its first setback of the season, 70-59, for the Hoyas’ seventh consecutive win. In Thursday’s victory over George Mason, the junior guard totaled 25 points and eight boards. Georgetown closes non-conference play with an 8-2 record, its best non-league mark since 2011-12 when the Hoyas opened the year 11-2 (.846) leading up to BIG EAST play. GU’s seven-game win streak is also its finest since 2011-12.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Shadeen Samuels, Seton Hall, Fr., G/F
Samuels had a career performance in The Hall’s lone contest of the week, a 77-59 victory over LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday. The rookie poured in a career-high 18 points on a tidy 7-of-10 performance from the floor, also tying her personal best with six rebounds. Samuels needed only 13 minutes off the bench for her first career-double digit scoring effort, grabbing five offensive rebounds and not committing a turnover. Seton Hall is the first team since Connecticut in 1998-99 to claim three consecutive BIG EAST Freshman of the Week certificates by three different players (Tamika Williams, Nov. 30; Ashja Jones, Dec. 7; Swin Cash, Dec. 14).
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Allazia Blockton, Marquette, So., G
In a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles, Blockton averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists, knocking down 53.8 percent of her shots, including 3-of-4 from deep. The sophomore had 24 points and 10 boards at Wisconsin on Sunday for her second double-double of the year.
Raeshaun Gaffney, Xavier, R-Sr., G
In a 2-1 week for the Musketeers, Gaffney averaged 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 assists. The redshirt-senior led Xavier to wins over RV/RV Michigan along with rival Cincinnati. Gaffney totaled 24 points, including an 11-of-12 clip from the charity stripe, in the victory over the Bearcats.
Jessica January, DePaul, Sr., G
In a 1-1 week for the Blue Demons, January averaged 15.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds. The senior tied for the game high with 19 points against No. 2/1 Notre Dame on Saturday night.
LaTecia Smith, Seton Hall, So., G
Smith stuffed the stat sheet in The Hall’s lone game of the week, going for 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals in a victory over LIU Brooklyn.
Akina Wellere, St. John’s, So., G/F
In the Red Storm’s lone game of the week, Wellere led St. John’s to a dominant victory over Rutgers with 19 points off 6-of-7 shooting, along with two rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
