BIG EAST Notes - Dec. 29 Update

RV/- Marquette 77, Villanova 71

Despite a career-high 31 points from Adrianna Hahn, RV/- Marquette scored a 77-71 win at Villanova on Wednesday. Hahn matched the Wildcats’ record for three-pointers with nine en route to the highest point total by a BIG EAST player this season. Allazia Blockton led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 21 points off 10-of-19 shooting, while Erika Davenport notched her league-best eighth double-double of the year with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. The back-and-forth battle saw nine lead changes and a pair of ties. Marquette outscored Nova 28-14 in a decisive third quarter to lead by as many as 13. The Wildcats responded in the fourth with their own 28-point frame, but Marquette held on down the stretch, never relinquishing the lead it captured midway through the third period. The win was the Golden Eagles’ fourth straight as Marquette becomes the first BIG EAST team to 10 wins this season.

RV/22 DePaul 76, RV/- Georgetown 53
Despite being without BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Jessica January for the second half, RV/22 DePaul pulled away from the host Hoyas 76-53 for its third-straight win. After a hot first quarter of 53-percent shooting, Georgetown went cold from the field the rest of the way, hitting just 24 percent of its attempts over the next three quarters while DePaul sank nearly 50 percent of its attempts during that stretch. The Blue Demons turned a three-point halftime lead into a 24-point advantage as four players scored in double figures, including a team-high 16 points from Amarah Coleman. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Brooke Schulte notched a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Tania Allen added a double-double of 14 points, 11 boards. Georgetown’s Dionna White led all scorers with 18 points as the Hoyas saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end. Faith Woodard became the 24th Hoya all-time to reach 1,000 career points, scoring 10 points on the afternoon.

Creighton 67, Butler 52
Trailing by six at halftime, Creighton limited Butler to just four third-quarter points to pull ahead at the six-minute mark and never look back. Four Bluejays scored in double figures led by Marissa Janning’s team-high 17 points to go along with six assists and six boards. Butler’s Michelle Weaver had a game-high 18 points, draining 2-of-3 attempts from deep. Creighton recorded a program-best 15 blocks, including four apiece by Brianna Rollerson and Jaylyn Agnew. After shooting nearly 44 percent in the first half, Butler was limited to just 17 percent over the final 20 minutes, while Creighton remained a steady 40 percent for the contest and committed a season-low eight turnovers.

Xavier 54, Providence 51
Xavier rebounded from scoring just 16 points in the first half to an explosive 38-point final 20 minutes to edge Providence 54-51. The Musketeers shot nearly 43 percent in the second half, snagging the lead with just under 2:30 remaining in the contest. Maddison Blackwell led XU with 15 points and nine boards, sinking 7-of-13 shots and grabbing five offensive rebounds. Providence’s Sarah Beal scored a game-high 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The Friars led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but Xavier limited PC to under 28-percent shooting over the final 20 minutes to erase the deficit. With one minute remaining, the Musketeers had the ball with a one-point advantage. Despite missing three consecutive shot attempts, XU gathered three consecutive offensive boards in a span of 40 seconds before Blackwell hit a jumper with 17 ticks remaining to extend the Xavier advantage to three points.
