BIG EAST Player of the Week
Jessica January, DePaul, 5-7, Jr., G
January nearly averaged a triple-double in a 1-1 week for the Blue Demons which included a win over second-place squad St. John’s on Sunday. The junior stuffed the stat sheet versus the Red Storm and Seton Hall by averaging 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 8.5 assists, 2.0 steals and .536 shooting. Against St. John’s in a nationally televised tilt, January was one dime shy of her second triple-double of the month with her 21-point, 10-rebound, nine-assist and three-steal showing. She knocked down 9-of-13 attempts from the field to give nationally ranked DePaul a two-game lead atop the BIG EAST standings. On Friday against the Pirates, January totaled 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists, playing all 40 minutes in the single-digit setback. January earns the weekly award for the second time this season.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Allazia Blockton, Marquette, 6-0, Fr., G
Blockton etched her name into the Marquette record book on Sunday, becoming the all-time freshman scoring leader with 416 points thus far. Angel Robinson previously held the program’s newcomer standard of 399, set during the 2007-08 campaign. Blockton led MU to its fourth and fifth consecutive victories, knocking off a pair of teams which currently sit in a second-place tie in the league standings. The rookie averaged 18 points, 7.5 rebound and 4.0 assists in wins over St. John’s and Seton Hall. She totaled 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals against the Red Storm on Friday before going for 21 points, 10 rebounds and three dimes against the Pirates on Sunday. The six-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week is 112 points shy of the BIG EAST freshman scoring record, set by Providence’s Kerri Chatten in 1994-95.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Dorothy Adomako, Georgetown, 6-1, So., G
Adomako led the Hoyas to an undefeated weekend which included the season sweep of Creighton, averaging 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in victories over the Bluejays and Providence. At Providence on Friday the sophomore totaled 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting.
Caroline Coyer, Villanova, 5-10, Sr., G
In a 2-1 week for the Wildcats, which included a notable non-league win over Penn, Coyer averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists, knocking down 44.7 percent of her shots, including 50 percent from deep. She registered 23 points, eight boards and seven dimes against the Quakers on Tuesday.
Danaejah Grant, St. John’s, 5-9, Sr., G
In a pair of single-digit setbacks at two of the hottest teams in the league, Grant averaged a team-high 21.5 points to go along with 6.5 rebounds and .485 shooting.
Aleesha Powell, Seton Hall, 5-6, Sr., G
The Pirates earned a crucial win at No. 23/21 DePaul on Friday thanks in part to Powell’s effort of 24 points and six boards. For the 1-1 weekend the senior averaged 20 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting .625 from the field and .667 from deep.
Aliyah Zantt, Xavier, 5-6, Sr., G
In the Musketeers lone game of the week, Zantt led Xavier to the home win over Butler with 24 points and four assists, knocking down 8-of-15 attempts from the field, including 6-of-10 from long range.
