NEW YORK – Just two weeks remain in the women’s basketball regular season and with only one seed locked up, this weekend’s games have plenty of postseason implications. The BIG EAST Digital Network will stream seven of the contests, with FS1 and FS2 carrying two others. Friday features a BEDN triple-header starting with nationally ranked DePaul at Providence at 7 p.m., while Sunday has four games slated beginning at noon when Villanova visits Georgetown.
Sport: Women’s Basketball
Friday: DePaul at Providence, 7 p.m.; St. John’s at Xavier, 7 pm.; Marquette at Creighton, 8 p.m.
Sunday: Villanova at Georgetown, Noon; Marquette at Providence, 1 p.m.; St. John’s at Butler, 2 p.m.; Seton Hall at Xavier, 2 p.m.
Why We’re Watching: Plenty is on the line this weekend in BIG EAST women’s hoops. No. 23/23 DePaul, which clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament and at least a share of the regular-season title, will be the outright champs with just one more win or a St. John’s loss. Prior to Sunday’s tilt at Creighton which will air on FS1, the Blue Demons travel to Providence on Friday, which scored its first win of the conference slate on Sunday against the Bluejays. Creighton will have to get by Marquette first, which has won seven of its last nine. The Friars and Butler have already secured a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, which the bottom four teams in the league standings compete in while the top six advance directly to the Quarterfinals. All eyes will be on Sunday’s Georgetown-Villanova tilt. The Hoyas took Game 1 of the season series three weeks ago and a season sweep could prove crucial when it comes time for tiebreakers. Wildcat head coach Harry Perretta is sitting at 699 career wins as Seton Hall spoiled his bid for No. 700 on Sunday. The Pirates are currently tied with Xavier in the standings for fourth place at 8-6, and the two teams meet Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati. Currently all alone in second place, St. John’s gets a shot at the Musketeers first on Friday, who have dealt the Red Storm untimely setbacks in each of the last two seasons. Seton Hall visits Butler on Friday prior to Sunday’s match with Xavier, with the Pirate-Bulldog battle airing on FS2.
