NEW YORK – The BIG EAST awarded Athlete of the Week honors for tennis on Wednesday with Sam Anderson of Creighton taking the women’s award and Peter Beatty of Georgetown getting the men’s title.

Sam Anderson went unbeaten in Creighton's 5-2 win over crosstown opponent Omaha last Wednesday.
Teaming with Claire Embree, Anderson earned a 7-5 win at No. 2 Doubles, and was one of five Bluejays to record singles wins, helping Creighton erase a 2-0 match deficit in order to clinch the win. Her win at No. 5 Singles, 6-2, 6-1, came against Janelle Wilson.
 
BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Peter Beatty, Georgetown, So.
Beatty led the Georgetown men's tennis team to its second victory of the season with a 4-3 win over Monmouth on Friday.  The sophomore paired with Yannik Mahlangu to secure the doubles point for the Hoyas with a win at the No.2 spot. Beatty then guided the Blue & Gray in singles play  defeating Monmouth’s Ale Gomez 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
 
BIG EAST Tennis Notebook
The Butler men were bested twice last week, coming up short against Indianapolis 4-3 and No. 41 Louisville 6-1. They travel to Northern Illinois this Friday. On the women’s side, the Bulldogs would go 1-2 for the weekend, topping Indianapolis 6-1 before falling to Lipscomb 6-1 and Southern Illinois 4-0 to close the three-match stretch. They take on SIUE and Illinois State this weekend.
 
After besting Omaha, the Creighton women’s tennis team will take on Coe College on Saturday.
 
The DePaul women’s tennis team faced a tough slate last week, dropping contests to No. 51 Purdue 5-2 and No. 37 Tulsa 4-0. The Blue Demons come back at Illinois on Friday. The DePaul men’s squad was swept by No. 74 Wisconsin 7-0 in the Blue Demons lone match last week. Both the men’s and women’s teams will face off with BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Saturday.
 
Before clashing with DePaul, the Georgetown women’s tennis team will meet with the University of Chicago on Friday.
 
The Marquette men downed UIC at home in its lone match last week while the women’s squad fell to Western Michigan on the road, 4-3. The Golden Eagles men’s team takes on Purdue this weeknd while the women will clash with Green Bay.
 
The Providence women’s tennis team was swept 7-0 by St. John’s in the Friars only competition last week.  They will be back in action at home this Friday against Marist.
 
Before sweeping Providence, the St. John’s women’s team swept LIU Brooklyn 7-0 as well to stay perfect at home this season. The Red Storm finished the week with a loss on the road to Syracuse, 5-0. The men’s contingent went 2-2 at the ECAC Championships. Both losses were to ranked opponents, falling to No. 60 Cornell and No. 38 Dartmouth 4-1 in each match. The Johnnies picked up wins over Yale, 4-1, and Brown, 4-0. The men will take on George Washington this Saturday and the women will face Hartford on Sunday.
 
The Seton Hall women’s team was bested by Rutgers 5-2 last week. The Pirates return to the court on Sunday against Quinnipiac.
 
The Xavier men’s team topped Ball State 5-2 last week, while the Musketeer’s women’s squad went 1-1, sweeping Eastern Michigan 7-0 before falling to Michigan State 4-3. The avier women will travel to South Carolina this weekend for matches against Winthrop and Furman while the men will take on Eastern Kentucky and IUPUI.
 
The next weekly honors for both men’s and women’s tennis will be awarded on Wednesday, February 24.
