MBB Minute: Wednesday's Results Full Of Highlights
Three league games and one non-conference contest on Wednesday created plenty of news.
Villanova, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, played the league’s final non-conference game and recorded an 83-67 win at Temple. Freshman Jalen Brunson, playing at his father’s alma mater, scored a collegiate-high 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor in front of a record crowd of 10,472 at Temple’s Liacouras Center. It was Villanova’s 14th straight win in the Philadelphia Big Five series.
Xavier’s Myles Davis produced a triple-double of 11 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in an 85-74 win over visiting Providence. It’s the 16th triple-double in a league game in BIG EAST history and the second this season. Trevon Bluiett helped XU with 23 points. Kris Dunn led the Friars with 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Xavier is in second place in the league standings with an 11-3 record.
Seton Hall earned a season sweep of Georgetown with a 72-64 win at the Verizon Center. Isaiah Whitehead’s hot streak continued with 22 points and six assists. He has averaged 21.0 points and 6.2 assists in his last six games. Kevin Willard became the sixth Seton Hall coach to reach 100 career wins at the school. Georgetown was led by Jesse Govan’s career-high 27 points and seven rebounds.
Providence, Georgetown and Butler are in a three-way tie for fifth place at 7-7.
St. John’s got its first BIG EAST win of the season and snapped a 16-game losing streak with an 80-65 victory over DePaul at Carnesecca Arena. Durand Johnson led four Red Storm players in double figures with 18 points. Federico Mussini scored all 17 of his points in the second half. DePaul freshman Eli Cain scored 25 points and had four steals.
BIG EAST arenas are quiet until Saturday when three games are on the docket. FOX has a doubleheader of Xavier at Georgetown at noon ET followed by Butler at Villanova at 2:30. Marquette plays at DePaul on FOX Sports Networks at 2 p.m.
