Seton Hall Sweeps First BIG EAST Weekly Awards
NEW YORK – Seton Hall first baseman Mikael-Ali Mogues and righty-pitcher Zach Prendergast earn the first BIG EAST Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday after taking two games from then-No. 15 Missouri in Fort Myers, Fla. over the weekend. . The Pirates dropped the opener on Friday, 7-0. On Saturday, they split a double-header, losing game one, 4-1, but winning game two, 8-4. On Sunday, The Hall routed the Tigers, 9-1. After being shut out on Friday, Seton Hall’s offense rebounded in a big way, averaging 10 hits per contest over the four games.
For the weekend, St. John’s also earned a win, 14-3 over Western Carolina in Wilmington, N.C. Georgetown also got a W, with a 6-5 win against UMBC in Winston Salem, N.C.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mikael-Ali Mogues, Seton Hall, Jr., 1B
Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues hit a league-best .636 with 7 hits in 11 at bats as he helped Seton Hall to a split series against No. 15 Missouri. The first baseman recorded a hit in all four games and reached base a total of 13 times while adding three runs, two RBI and five walks with a .909 slugging percentage and a .765 on base percentage. On Friday, Mogues went 2-for-3 with a double. In game one of Saturday’s double-header, he went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI. In the nightcap, Mogues reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. On Sunday, he reached base four times again, going 1-for-2 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, an RBI and two runs scored. He led the team in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage this weekend. After starting the series 0-2 in Fort Myers, Fla., Seton Hall came back to take the last two games against the ranked Tigers, 8-4 and 9-1.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Zach Prendergast, Seton Hall, Jr., RHP
Junior Zach Prendergast started Seton Hall’s rout of No. 15 Missouri on Sunday, which ended in a 9-1 victory. The right-hander pitched seven innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out eight batters and walking only one. The victory enabled Seton Hall to earn a split of the four-game series against the national power. Prendergast had eight outs and allowed just six hits.
BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor Roll
Michael Hartnagel, Butler, Jr., 2B
Hit .308 over the opening weekend with two of his four hits going for extra bases. He recorded two doubles, one run and six total bases with a perfect fielding percentage.
Michael DeRenzi, Georgetown, So., OF
Hit .400 (4-for-10) with one double, one RBI and three walks against Wake Forest, VMI and UMBC in Winston Salem, N.C. DeRenzi made it on base three times with a run scored on Sunday in the Hoyas’ 6-5 comeback win over UMBC.
David Ellingson, Georgetown, Jr., RP
Pitched two perfect innings in relief with 12 strikes in 16 pitches for the win in the Hoyas’ 6-5 come-from-behind victory over UMBC. Posted a 0.00 ERA with two strikeouts.
Aiden McDermott, St. John’s, R-Fr., OF/DH
McDermott hit safely in all three games and batted .455 (5-for-11) with one double, one HR, 6RBI and four runs scored with a .818 slugging percentage.
Todd Czinege, Villanova, Jr., 2B
Hit .400 going 4-10 with two runs, two RBI, one triple, one homerun with a .900 slugging and .455 on base percentage. Czinege hit 40-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the series finale against No. 12 Houston.
