Xavier's Bluiett, Sumner Take Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Xavier has swept the BIG EAST men’s basketball weekly honors with Trevon Bluiett being named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Edmond Sumner being named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Both players helped the Musketeers to wins over No. 23/20 Providence and at Georgetown last week.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, So.
Bluiett averaged 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in victories over No. 23/20 Providence and at Georgetown. He scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down six rebounds in an 85-74 win against Providence and followed that with 13 points and five rebounds in an 88-70 victory at Georgetown. For the season, Bluiett leads the Musketeers in scoring with a 15.3 average. He earns Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Edmond Sumner, Xavier, G, Fr.
Sumner wins freshman honors for the fifth time this season. He averaged 16.5 points and did not commit a turnover in a 2-0 week that included an 85-74 win over No. 23/20 Providence and an 88-70 victory at Georgetown. For the two games, he shot 71.4 percent from the floor and was 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Sumner tallied a career-high 22 points in the win at Georegtown.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Kelan Martin, Butler, F, So.
Averaged 20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had 21 points in a win over Creighton.
Haanif Cheatham, Marquette, G, Fr.
Scored a team-high 20 points in a win at DePaul and collected five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Shot 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Kassoum Yakwe, St. John’s, F, Fr.
Averaged 13.5 points and 13.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks. Had career highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds in a 62-61 loss to St. John’s.
Desi Rodriguez, Seton Hall, G, So.
Averaged 20.5 points in a 2-0 week on the road. Scored a career-high 24 points in a victory at St. John’s and had 17 points in a win at Georgetown.
Kris Jenkins, Villanova, F, Jr.
Averaged 17.5 points in a 2-0 week, including a 20-point, six-rebound effort in a win versus Butler.
