MBB Minute: Xavier Becomes First To 20, Villanova and Seton Hall Win
The game was not decided until the final minute, but when Xavier defeated visiting St. John’s 90-83 on Wednesday, the Musketeers became the first team in the nation to reach 20 wins.
Xavier owns a 20-2 overall record and an 8-2 BIG EAST mark. Myles Davis led the winners with 16 points and Trevon Bluiett added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
For St. John’s, Felix Balamou scored a career-high 20 points and Kassoum Yakwe notched 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.
Villanova maintained its one-game lead over Xavier in the standings by using a barrage of 3-pointers to beat Creighton 83-58. The Wildcats made 16-of-29 from behind the arc while the Bluejays were 8-of-25. Kris Jenkins paced VU with 22 points, which included 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Maurice Watson Jr. scored 16 points and dealt five assists for Creighton.
Seton Hall increased its winning streak to three games and ended Marquette’s three-game streak with a 79-62 victory at the Prudential Center. Isaiah Whitehead continued his hot play of late, recording a game-high 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Angel Delgado produced his 11th double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He shot 8-of-9 from the floor. The Pirates are 11-0 when Delgado has a double-double.
Marquette was led by Luke Fischer’s 17 points and six rebounds. Henry Ellenson posted his league-leading 14th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
All 10 BIG EAST schools return to action on Saturday.
