MBB Minute: Villanova Aims For Third Straight Outright Title
Villanova will be focusing on a win against DePaul on Tuesday, which would give the No. 3/2 Wildcats an unprecedented three straight BIG EAST outright titles. Regardless of tonight’s outcome, Villanova will be the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament for the third straight year.
Georgetown travels to Marquette in a battle of 7-9 teams that are fighting for position in the standings. The Hoyas won the first meeting 80-70 back on Jan. 2. After a 2-5 start in the BIG EAST, Marquette has gone 5-4 in league play.
FS1 has both games, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
With nine games remaining in the regular season, some of the seeding for The BIG EAST Tournament Presented by the Jeep Brand is becoming clearer, but there is still plenty of unknown.
Seton Hall’s 90-81 win over Xavier on Sunday helped the Pirates move toward a No. 3 seed. Desi Rodriguez had career highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds to propel the Pirates and improve to 11-5 in the league standings. Creighton beat St. John’s 100-59 on Sunday and has the only chance to catch Seton Hall for the third seed. The Bluejays are 9-7 in BIG EAST play and have to win their final two games and have the Pirates lose their last two to force a tie for third and go to tiebreakers.
Xavier’s loss slots the Musketeers as the No. 2 tourney seed, though they still have a chance to tie Villanova for the regular-season crown. Xavier would lose a tiebreaker with the Wildcats.
DePaul will be the No. 9 seed and St. John’s will be No. 10.
Wednesday’s games are Seton Hall at Butler and Creighton at Providence. Butler and Providence are tied for fifth in the standings at 8-8 and can be involved in ties with multiple teams in the middle of the standings.
