Providence’s Kearns, Denver’s Baptiste Earn BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards

NEW YORK  –  Providence freshman Brendan Kearns was named BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week after a six-point game that led the Friars to an upset over Hofstra on Saturday. Denver’s Trevor Baptiste was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after a 15-win faceoff performance to helping Denver limit Ohio State to six goals.
 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brendan Kearns, Providence, Fr., A
Kearns contributed six points off three goals and three assists in Providence’s 12-7 victory over then No. 12 Hofstra. The win was the first time that the Friars have defeated a ranked opponent since April 28, 2012. Kearns had back-to-back goals in the second and third quarters to put the Friars ahead 7-4.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Trevor Baptiste, Denver, So., FO
Baptiste went 15-for-23 (.652) to held Denver maintain possession in a 15-6 win over Ohio State on Saturday. Baptiste picked up 11 ground balls, nearly a third of Denver’s 32 total for the game. His possessions helped Denver limit Ohio State’s shot total to 21 with just six goals scored. Baptiste has tallied 15-plus faceoff wins in 18 career games.
 
BIG EAST Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll
Connor Cannizzaro, Denver, Jr., A
Recorded his 20th career hat trick in Denver’s 15-6 win over Ohio State. Cannizzaro had three goals and an assist with six shots, four on goal.
 
Ryan McNamara, Marquette, Jr., A
McNamara scored four goals for the third time this season in Marquette’s 11-5 victory at Quinnipiac. He leads the Golden Eagles with 17 goals and 20 points this year.
 
Johnny Gallaway, Villanova, Sr., A
Gallaway led Villanova to their fifth straight win with a season-high three goals for a perfect 1.000 SOG performance against Bucknell in a 12-8 win.
 
John Moderski, Villanova, Sr., D
Moderski picked up a career-high eight ground balls and caused one turnover that led Villanova to a strong defensive effort in a 12-8 win over Bucknell. Moderski was part of a Villanova defensive effort that caused 12 Bison turnovers.
