Marquette Players Sweep BIG EAST Lacrosse Weekly Awards

NEW YORK  –  On a 4-0 winning streak, including the first BIG EAST win of the season, Marquette earns both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors with Ryan McNamara and Jacob Richard. McNamara accounted for five of Marquette’s nine goals in the win against Georgetown on Saturday and Richard helped limit the Hoya offense to just eight goals as he picked up nine ground balls as the short-stick defender.
 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ryan McNamara, Marquette, Jr., A
McNamara set a new career-high with five goals, including the eventual game-winner in a 9-8 league victory over Georgetown on Saturday in front of a national audience on FS1. The Eagan, Minn., native scored the first goals of the first, third and fourth quarters and had back-to-back goals in the final stanza to put the Golden Eagles up 9-6 with 12:33 left. He leads Marquette with 22 goals on the season and was the league-leader in goals per game this past week. His five goal performance was also a BIG EAST best for the week.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Richard, Marquette, Sr., SSD
Richard tied a program-record he shares with two others on Saturday with nine ground balls in a league-victory over Georgetown. Richard’s nine ground balls in the game were a second best game performance in the league over the week as he led the league in ground balls per game. He also helped faceoff specialist Zachary Melillo go 15-for-21 at the X and scored his second goal of the season in the first quarter helping Marquette go up 3-2 on Georgetown. The eight goals allowed were the second lowest for the week by a BIG EAST team. Richard also added one caused turnover.
 
BIG EAST Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll
Chris Donovan, Georgetown, Fr., A
Donovan had a pair of two-goal games against Loyola Maryland and Marquette.
 
Jimmy Cunningham, Providence, Jr., D
Picked up a league-most 14 ground balls (7.00/game) in a 2-0 week for Providence. Cunningham had a league-best 11 ground balls in a 15-11 win over UMass-Lowell with four caused turnovers.
 
Michael Perettine, Providence, Sr., A
Netted the first hat trick of his career in a 9-7 victory over Bellarmine, also added a goal in a 15-11win over UMass-Lowell.
 
Justin Corpolongo, St. John’s, So., FOS
Despite a loss against No. 19 Hofstra, Corpolongo won 17-of-25 faceoffs for a .654 winning percentage, setting new career highs in faceoff wins and groundballs (eight).
 
Devin McNamara, Villanova, Jr., A
McNamara had a season high six points in Saturday’s win over Fairfield with four goals and two assists. The then-No.6/8 Wildcats defeated the Stags 15-9. The junior’s 6.0/game were a league high for the week.
