NEW YORK – This week on the BIG EAST Digital Network is a weekend edition focused on baseball and softball in Omaha, Neb. Friday night features Butler visiting Creighton at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha; while Sunday’s BEDN programming has Villanova against the Bluejays at the CU Sports Complex.

Why We're Watching: After league play opened last weekend, Creighton, St. John’s and Villanova are atop the standings at 2-1 each, all three teams being the host schools. Going into this weekend, the Bluejays were ranked the 30th best team in the country according to Monday’s RPI report, they were also ranked No. 30 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Creighton is 15-3 at home and just earned a big win Tuesday night over local-rival Nebraska (4-3). The Bluejays have lost just seven games all year (21-7). Creighton’s Daniel Woodrow leads the league in batting at a .364 average. Creighton is second in the country in ERA.  Butler took one in the three-game series at Villanova last week, defeating the Wildcats 11-6 in the second game of a Friday doubleheader. Butler’s Jordan Lucio leads the conference in doubles with 11. Michael Hartnagel’s .306 batting average is tops for the Bulldogs. Butler has a midweek clash on Wednesday at IPFW before traveling to Omaha, while Creighton hosts South Dakota State.

Why We're Watching: Villanova heads out to Omaha this weekend for a top of the table softball clash with Creighton. The Bluejays currently sit in second place in the conference at 6-1, fresh off a three-game sweep of Georgetown. Infielder Jen Daro powers the Creighton offense, currently leading the league in home runs and ranking in the top five for slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and RBI. In the circle, Sydnee Eck leads the league with 155 strikeouts and is tied for second with 13 wins. The Wildcats are currently in third place at 6-3, coming off a sweep of their own versus Seton Hall. Senior pitcher Kate Poppe is second in the country among active career leaders with over 900 career strikeouts. This season she ranks second behind Eck with 124 K’s. The two are tied with 13 wins; Six of Poppe’s coming in BIG EAST play. Villanova swept Creighton in their 2015 series.
