CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Xavier has a three-stroke lead after the first day of competition at the 2016 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship Presented by the Jeep Brand.  The Musketeers have a team score of 313.  Georgetown is three strokes back in second place at 316 followed closely by Seton Hall in third at 318 and Butler in fourth at 319.  St. John’s is fifth at 331 and Creighton is sixth at 340.

Individually, Xavier senior Shane Crutchfield and Georgetown’s Mackenzie Boydston, both seniors, share the lead at two-over-par 74 that came on a sunny, but windy day at Callawassie Island.  St. John’s Anna Kim is one stroke back in third place at 75 with Seton Hall’s Karlie Zabrosky in fourth at 76.  Kim and Zabrosky are also seniors.

Xavier placed three golfers in the top six places with sophomore Hanna Lee fifth at 77 and freshman Mikayla Smith tied for sixth with Butler sophomore Abigail Gleixner at 78.

The BIG EAST champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.  The four teams crowded at the top – Xavier, Georgetown, Seton Hall and Butler – also were the top four seeded teams going into this week’s tournament.

Boydston shot a 37 on the front and back nines.  Two years ago, she finished in a tie for second place in the Championship.  Last year, Crutchfield tied for ninth place.

Sophomore Jacquelyn Eleey of Georgetown, last year’s individual champion, is in a six-way tie for 12th at 81.

The second round of competition begins Saturday at 8 a.m. ET.
