Xavier's Crutchfield Captures Individual Crown

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Seton Hall became the first team in BIG EAST history to win three consecutive women’s golf titles, capturing the 2016 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship by 12 strokes over runner-up Georgetown at Callawassie Island Golf Club.

As the BIG EAST champion, Seton Hall earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The Pirates finished the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 935 (+71).  The Hoyas, who have been the runner-up to Seton Hall for all three years, finished at 947 (+83).  Georgetown rallied to take the lead briefly early in the final round before the Pirates bounced back under sunny, but windy conditions at Callawassie.  Xavier finished third with a team score of 950.  Butler was fourth at 959 followed by St. John’s (992) and Creighton (995).

Xavier senior Shane Crutchfield was the individual winner, carding a 54-hole total of 222, six over par.  She led all golfers in the final round with a 75 that included 14 pars and a birdie on the difficult par-5 17th hole.  Senior Anna Kim of St. John’s was the individual runner-up, three strokes off the pace at 225.  Georgetown senior Mackenzie Boydston finished third at 226.

Seton Hall used its depth en route to its third straight conference championship.  The Pirates placed four golfers in the top 10.  Senior Karlie Zabrosky and sophomore Cassie Pantelas tied for fourth at 231.  Senior Megan Tenhundfeld was ninth at 236 and graduate student McKenzie Cutter finished 10th at 237. Zabrosky’s final round of 77 was the best Seton Hall score of the day.  Pantelas and Tenhundfeld were at 78 and Cutter shot an 81.

As the top five individual finishers, Crutchfield, Kim, Boydston, Zabrosky and Pantelas were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Butler sophomore Kelsey McDougall was the Bulldogs’ performer, taking sixth place at 233.  Georgetown freshman Alexa Popowitz helped the Hoyas to their runner-up finish by finishing seventh at 234.   Xavier sophomore Hanna Lee was eighth at 235.
