CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – With three golfers in the top 10 and four shooting 75 or better, Georgetown has the lead after the first day of competition at the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.  The Hoyas hold a nine-stroke lead over Marquette and Xavier, which are tied for second place.

The second round of the 54-hole tournament begins Monday at 8 a.m. ET.  The BIG EAST team winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.  Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual.

Xavier sophomore Jose Montaño shot a three-under-par 69 to take the individual lead.  Junior Lloyd Jefferson Go of Seton Hall and sophomore Sam Madsen of Georgetown are one stroke back at 70.

Georgetown was led by Madsen and sophomore Cole Berman, who is in a tie for fourth at 72.  Freshman Harrison Rhoades is tied for sixth at 73.  Sophomore Jack Musgrave carded a 75.  The Hoyas’ team score was 290.

“The golf course played very hard today because of the weather changes throughout the day, but I’m proud of my guys,” said Georgetown coach Tommy Hunter.  “They took what the golf course gave them, but tomorrow will be another day.”

Montaño, who entered the Championship as the top ranked BIG EAST golfer, made six birdies en route to his 69.  He finished seventh in last year’s tournament.  Go, Seton Hall’s standout junior, had five birdies included in his 70.  Georgetown’s Madsen posted 13 pars to help get him to 70.  In last year’s Championship, Go finished third and Madsen was ninth.

DePaul’s Adrian Halimi is tied with Berman for fourth place at 72.  A four-way tie for sixth at 73 includes Georgetown’s Rhoades, Villanova’s Lucas Trim, Butler’s Joey Arcuri and Marquette’s Charlie Maleki.  Creighton’s top finisher Kade Brown and St. John’s top finisher Seung Yub Baek were part of four-way tie for 10th at 74.

Marquette and Xavier finished with team scores of 299.  DePaul is in fourth place, but only one stroke behind at 300.  Butler and Seton Hall are tied for fifth at 305 followed by Creighton in seventh place at 308 and St. John’s and Villanova tied for eighth at 311.
