Marquette Men, Villanova Women Lead After First Day of Track & Field Championships

GENEVA, Ohio
 –  After nine field events and four events completed on the first day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships Presented by Jeep, the Marquette men and the Villanova women lead. Competition will resume on Saturday morning for the championship final at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
 
Women’s leader Villanova accounted for 62 points. The Golden Eagles are in second on the women’s side with 51 points, three points more than third place St. John’s.
 
The men’s leader Marquette finished Friday with a commanding 44-point lead with 104 points. Villanova is second with 60 points and Georgetown in third with 36 points.
 
For the women, Marquette, St. John’s and Villanova all boasted BIG EAST Champions in the field events with the Red Storm winning both the hammer throw and long jump titles. Sophomore Nyla Woods won the throwing event for St. John’s as the Red Storm placed three in the top four. Woods finished with a winning throw of 53.03 meters. St. John’s senior Ann Dagrin was runner up with a distance of 52.20 meters. In the long jump, Red Storm sophomore Erica Graham jumped a distance of 5.67 meters for the win.
 
Marquette junior Nicole Jaffke and her teammate sophomore Gemma Tedeschi finished No. 1 and 2 in the pole vault. Jaffke won with a height of 3.71 meters.
 
In the javelin, Villanova finished 1-2-3 with Caroline Hamilton winning the event with a throw of 41.67 meters. Two Wildcat juniors Veronica Scott (37.82 meters) and Hannah Lee (34.45 meters) finished with her on the podium.
 
After four events scored in the women’s heptathlon, St. John’s sophomore Julia Schwan leads the way with 2,803 points. Marquette rookie Monique Felix is close behind with 2,752 points and classmate Catherine Sherwood  is in third with 2,470 points.
 
The men’s hammer was won by DePaul’s Trevor Kintyhtt a junior who threw 58.21 meters. Marquette finished in the next four spots taking home 23 points in the event.
 
The Golden Eagles won the four other field events that competed as junior Dwayne Dash won the men’s long jump (7.47 meters), William Ford won the men’s pole vault (4.91 meters), John Krzyszkowski won the men’s javelin throw (66.13 meters) and senior Wally Ellenson repeated as the men’s outdoor high jump champion with a 2.15 meter jump. His 2015 height was 2.11 meters.
 
The men’s decathlon finished the day with five events scored as Marquette’s William Eggers leads the way with 3,373 points. Carson Meinholz (3146 points) also from Marquette is in second with Abe Margo from Butler in third (3145 points).

The first day of competition ended on the track with the 3,000-meter steeplechase. On the women’s side, Providence sophomore Brianna Ilarda won the even with a time of 9:59.54. Butler had women place second and third with Laura Riches (10:31.19) and Colleen Weatherford (10:33.34). For the men, Georgetown’s Darren Fahy won the steeplechase crown with a time of 8:54.45. It was the third-straight time a Hoya won the men’s steeplechase.
 
Butler won the 10,000-meter run for the second year in a row this year with junior Olivia Pratt. She crossed the finish line at 34:20.50. Georgetown’s Jonathan Green won the men’s 10K with a time of 31:06.24.
 
Competition will begin again on Saturday at 10 a.m. as the heptathlon 110-meter hurdles kicks off the day. The BIG EAST Digital Network coverage will start at 12:45 p.m. with John Fanta and interviews with Cayleigh Griffin. The final awards and senior day ceremony will begin approximately at 5:40 p.m. Eastern
