GENEVA, Ohio
 – The Marquette Golden Eagles became the 2016 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Champions for both the men and the women after an exciting two-day event at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. It is the first BIG EAST Championship win on both sides.
 
Marquette scored 196 points on the women’s side with four event wins. On the men’s side, the Golden Eagles scored 246 points with six individual title winners at the Championships, presented by Jeep.
 
Villanova was the runner up on both the men’s and women’s sides. The Wildcats scored 179 points on the women’s side, besting third place St. John’s by just three points (176). Villanova also finished with 179 points on the men’s side.
 
Marquette’s coaching staff headed by Bert Rogers won Coaching Staff of the Year for both the women and the men. Marquette freshman Monique Felix won BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events, scoring 22 points for the Golden Eagles with league title in the heptathlon, a second place finish in the triple jump and a fifth place finish in the javelin. St. John’s graduate student Pariis Garcia was voted the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer for Track Events as she was part of three BIG EAST titles for the Red Storm. Garcia was the repeat winner in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.34 seconds. She was also part of both St. John’s relay victories on Saturday, running the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay (46.43 total) and anchoring the 4x400-meter relay (3:42.56).
 
Villanova freshman Sterling Pierce was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer in Track Events, with event wins in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Pierce crossed the tape at 10.64 seconds in the 100 and 21.57 in the 200. DePaul’s Trevor Kintyhtt, a junior thrower, was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events. Kintytt won both the shot put (15.35 meters) and hammer throw (58.21).
 
All the votes for the major award were unanimous. Votes were cast by the league’s head coaches with no votes cast for themselves or their own student-athletes.
 
Saturday’s repeat winners from 2015 included Villanova’s Shanice Grant in the 100-meter hurdles (13.83), Garcia in the 400-meter dash, Georgetown’s Katrina Coogan in the 1,500-meter run (4:31.76), DePaul’s Sarah Chappell in the discus (47.17 meters), Marquette’s Maya Marion in the shot put (14.27 meters) and Georgetown’s Joseph White in the 800-meter run (1:50.77).
 
Villanova’s Patrick Tiernan became a three-time champion in the men’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:36.85.
 
DePaul finished third with 163 points in the men’s team rankings. DePaul, Marquette and Villanova tied for the most event wins with six each.  
 
On the women’s side, St. John’s and Villanova led the way in event titles with five each.
 
The decathlon pole vault and the women’s high jump were competed indoors due to weather.
