Xavier Wins 2016 BIG EAST Regular Season Title
NEW YORK – The Xavier Musketeers completed the sweep of Villanova on Saturday, 9-0, sealing the deal on their first BIG EAST Regular Season title. Xavier finished 14-4 in BIG EAST play locking up the No. 1 seed in this week’s BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep.
Creighton will by the No. 2 seed, finishing at 13-5 after losing to St. John’s on Saturday, 6-2.
Seton Hall swept Butler with a final score of 5-2 over Butler.
No. 1 Xavier will play No. 4 St. John’s in the 3:30 p.m. game on Thursday, No. 2 Creighton vs. No. 3 Seton Hall will follow at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s games will be on BEDN, while Championship Sunday will air on FS2.
Xavier was picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll. The Musketeers finished the season winning 13 of its last 15 games.
Xavier’s Joe Gellenbeck had two home runs and six RBI in the win, including a grand slam.
The BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep will take place Thursday, May 26 through Sunday, May 29 in Aberdeen, Md. at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, home to the Aberdeen Ironbirds. Tickets can be purchased
