#BIGEASTtrack Sends 51 To NCAA Track & Field Prelims
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The road to Eugene, Oregon runs through both Jacksonville, Fla., and Lawrence, Kansas this weekend as 51 competitors from all eight BIG EAST schools who have track & field will compete in the NCAA Preliminaries for the Track & Field Championship starting Thursday, May 26 through Saturday, May 29.
In the East Region Preliminaries, which will take place at Hodges Stadium and hosted by University of North Florida and the City of Jacksonville, the BIG EAST boasts 44 participants from six member schools. Georgetown has the most with 18 total student-athletes, followed by nine from Providence, eight from Villanova, five from St. John’s, three from Butler and one from Xavier.
Marquette and DePaul represent the BIG EAST in the West Region Preliminaries with three entries from DePaul and four from Marquette . The West Region Preliminaries are hosted by University of Kansas at Rock Chalk Park.
The Regional list includes 18 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Champions.
For each individual event contested at each of the Preliminary sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition. Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), are not contested at the Preliminary sites.
Qualifying to the NCAA Championships in Eugene on June 8-11 is accomplished through performance in the Preliminary site competition. Twelve competitors from each individual event and twelve teams from each relay event advance from each Preliminary site. For combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), the top 24 declared student-athletes in each event based on their position on the national descending-order list will be accepted into the Championships.
