#BIGEASTbase Minute – No. 2 Creighton and No. 4 St. John’s Clash In Elimination Saturday
ABERDEEN, Md. – One ticket was punched on Friday to the Championship Final – regular season title winner Xavier. On Saturday, Creighton and St. John’s will square off in a 3 p.m. elimination game to determine who will face the Musketeers on Sunday and who will be sent home from the 2016 BIG EAST Baseball Championship presented by Jeep at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.
No. 2 Creighton won the series against fourth-seeded St. John’s 2-1. The one loss however denied the Bluejays a share of the regular season title. Last year in Omaha, site of the 2015 BIG EAST Championship, St. John’s won both games against Creighton, including the championship.
The Red Storm came into the tournament as the last team in. They lost Thursday afternoon as top-seeded Xavier used their last licks for a walk off single to move on to the championship bracket, 9-8. On Friday, St. John’s avoided being sent home early with a 4-1 victory over No. 3 seed Seton Hall. Pitcher Ryan McAuliffe had a seven-inning outing for the Red Storm.
Creighton won their opening game on Thursday night in a dramatic fashion, capitalizing on a trio of Seton Hall errors to steal a 6-5 victory in the ninth. On Friday, Xavier edged the Bluejays scoring four runs in the fourth inning that Creighton could not overcome. The Musketeers ended up wining 5-3.
BEDN will carry Saturday’s elimination game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:03 p.m. Pat O’Keefe and Jonathan Yardley will have the call with dugout hits from John Fanta and Kim Adams.
