Livi and Liggins represent the BIG EAST in the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters

NEW YORK – St. John’s men’s tennis player Roberto Livi and Xavier’s women’s tennis player Sydney Liggins were invited to the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters event on Monday after receiving his invitation from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The 32-player tournament is set for Oct. 13-16 in Malibu, Calif. It is one of four national championship events on the college tennis calendar and features 28 student-athletes who earned bids from their respective conferences, plus four student-athletes who received wild cards or at-large selections. Livi received his selection from the BIG EAST conference.

The reigning two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year, Livi went 17-4 in singles play, mostly at the No. 3 spot, and held a 13-7 record in doubles play. Livi was just one of three student-athletes who were voted by unanimous decision to the 2015-16 All-BIG EAST Team, marking his third selection to the team in as many years.

Livi also went a perfect 4-0 in the BIG EAST Championship, helping lead the Red Storm to its third-straight BIG EAST title and earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award along the way.

Named the 2016 BIG EAST Player of the Year, Liggins went 6-3 in singles play when playing an opponent of a ranked team.  She won 26 singles matches with a team-high win percentage of 0.839. Paired with Amina Ismail, Liggins also secured 22 doubles matches.

The senior was honored as the 2016 BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player after going undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in the team's run to the title.  She finished the season with a No. 10 ranking in the Ohio Valley Region.
